Disadvantages: Joystick, Phone Memory, GPRS and Video Playback
I have never updated my phones as freely as most of my peers, and considering I am only 21, I've seen some of my friends update their phones 2-3 times per annum. I bought the original Nokia 3310 and then this was the next step up for me a few years later.
Features
--------------------------
2.0 megapixel camera:
Although now a 2.0MP camera on a phone is a bit old hat, at the time the camera did what you wanted it to, too take pictures in situations where you would not have or need a real digital camera. The picture quality is good and it included some effects so you could edit your images - perfect for the Myspace culture of the time.
Bluetooth:
This was the reason I probably bought the phone to begin with. With bluetooth I could send all of the files including pictures, contacts and games to any of my friends and it would cost me nothing. This is a very useful application for a phone because sending files using memory sticks has always been a bit of a hassle and it is a massive time saver.
Media Player:
The name for this section of the phone is a bit of an overstatement, of course it does allow to view your own videos and stream straight from online, but as an integral part of a phone the fact that it has its own menu slot all seems a bit glorified. Add to that the the picture quality of the video camera is quite poor.
MMS:
Multimedia Messaging Service:
This service allows you to send multimedia such as pictures and videos by way of a text message. Very helpful for things such as interactive birthday cards or funny clips.
GPRS:
Access to the internet is what this jargon actually means. While it is an excellent idea for phones now for the sake of finding places, checking prices and even keeping up to date on the news; back then it was awful with ridiculous loading speeds and high prices.
Music:
One of the best parts of the phone. I could not commute without some sort of media player and this did the job. You will find that you will have to buy a much larger memory stick than the one offered and being a Sony it would have to be a specific, more expensive memory stick (the ProDuo). Very expensive when I owned the phone, far more accessible now.
Battery Life
--------------------------
This phone is a beast. On one full charge the battery could last you days at a time with limited use. Yet, even with high usage the phone would last a very long period of time. I wish phones now were made to last like this one.
Ease of Use
--------------------------
Very simple and easy to use phone. Just click on the menu button and use the joystick to navigate around the pages. My only issue from experience was that the joystick could often get dirt in it and then become unreliable. It was not an easy to fix problem.
Durability
--------------------------
Practically a tank. You could probably kick it across a field and it would survive the journey unscathed. Just do not drop it in water.
My own opinion
--------------------------
I had this phone for a long period of time and to be honest it did everything that I wanted it to do. It took pictures, played games and played music. The video camera was lacking, the phone memory (34MB) was tiny and the joystick problem was a big one. But, overall for its time it was a very good piece of kit with only a few flaws.
Advice
--------------------------
I would only advise buying this phone if you only really need to do the basics. This would be a perfect first phone for any young teenagers and now can be bought for a very small price.
Summary: An excellent first phone that covers the basics extremely well
