The future of univeral compatibility maybe here in the form of a Memory Stick. Although Sony designed it i'm not going to call it the Sony Memory Stick. The reason is that, as in the past, Sony invents and everyone takes and improvises. Anyway, the Memory Stick is a storage media for Digital cameras, computers and even the silly Sony robot. They are only some of the products now available, and the list is growing throughout many product categories. Imagine half a pack of chewing gum, well, that's the size of a Memory Stick. For example you plug the Memory Stick in your digital camera and you can save your pictures, you could then attatch it to your computer and download the pictures onto your hard drive. Like Zips and floppies, the media can be reused. So lets say you've downloaded the pictures onto your computer you can then delete them and put the Stick into your mp3 player and save music onto it. The Memory Stick initially holds 4 MB, 8 MB, and 16 MB capacities. I think we can safely assume higher capacity sticks in the future. Sony's hope is to make Memory Stick a universal standard for digital equipment. If Sony is as successful as they hope to be, the price for Memory Sticks should drop as the market grows and technology advances. Adv: The speed will be excellent, and response should be instantaneous - no need to spin a disk up to speed before you can access it. Dis: But from a strictly computer perspective, media looks very expensive. A #1 CD-R can store 650 MB, a #10 Zip can hold almost 100 MB, but the #37 Stick has a capacity of only 16 MB. It's really something for the future so only a few specialist places deal with them
