Advantages: Specifically designed for UK, Low cost, Includes Ku detection

Disadvantages: Medium range radar detector, Windscreen mount not included, No frequency disable option

I have wanted to buy a radar detector for several months due to the government's increase in the number of speed cameras and their eagerness to hand out speeding fines but the cost has always put me off. I have seen radar detectors for under £100 but they have either been designed for the American market (not UK) or have only been 4-band, i.e. they do not include Ku - the new frequency band that has been introduced in the UK.

Upon searching the Internet one evening I found the Ranger Radar Detector. This is a 5-band unit for under £100 and it claimed to be specifically tuned to the UK frequencies. After further investigation, I decided to order it.

I must say I am pleased with my purchase. The Ranger works well, it detects and warns of roadside cameras - an essential reminder for drivers like myself who switch into auto-pilot after a long day at work. It also detects laser and radar guns which I have not yet had the fortune/misfortune to find and test it with.

The Ranger does produce false alarms generated by automatic door openers and some traffic lights but from my research it seems you even get these with £300 radar detectors.

My son and his friends love the fact it has a 'knight-rider' light effect on the front but this can be turned off. I just love impressing my colleagues by showing them, which speed cameras are working and which are not.

A belated welcome to dooyoo, and a well-written first opinion. There are so many roadside cameras in my area that it is easier to just keep to the speed limit. Although I miss the days of yore when we could whip down almost traffic-free roads at any speed we liked, I think that today's driving conditions are such that it is better to give in.
