Four Wheel Thunder, in my opinion, is not as bad as some people make out, but then each to their own train of thought, as I think it is worth getting this monster truck/off road racing game. The game does have its downsides, but it also has a lot of positives to go by. The graphics are very good, although they could have done a lot more with the presentation and menu screens: they look too dark and fiddly. The monster trucks look reasonably shiny, and the arenas, outdoor circuits are quite interesting & look good, but the sky just doesn’t seem to fit right, looks very odd. You can also race smaller four-wheel drive cars, which look like buggies. The game plays very well indeed, with a good control system – the cars handle well, and the emphasis being on speed, picking up power ups, much like in games of Hydro Thunder, and of course the aim is to win. Frame Rate is fantastic – a little too fast at times, as one second’s lost concentration will result in a crash. You can play one player in a championship, or even 2 players in championship, but the likelihood is that just one of you will take it on, definitely a challenge! The two player games are superb though, probably the best aspect of 4 Wheel Thunder: play a bomb tag mode, balloon popping and all sorts. Give the game a chance to impress as it is slightly hard to win anything, but it’s worth getting to grips with. The worst aspects of the game have to be the lame engine noises and awful music, which are painful to listen to. Overall, a worthy game of your money, you should be able to pick this up for a bargain price – somewhere around £10. 4 Stars.

Never before have I hated a racing game so much as this, and yet it does have some positive elements, it got great reviews from the Dreamcast magazines, but I have to disagree with their scores - 4 wheel Thunder is an awful game, to be honest it's practically impossible to complete, the 'music' is atrocious and the gameplay is flawed - the power up style of play, like the Hydro Thunder game, it's just not the way to have racing games these days. 4 wheel thunder is so noisy, it will leave a ringing in your ears and you'll never want to play it again = nothing is such a din!! It's all so wrong - the proportions, the speed - you're going so fast in a truck, in an unrealistic environment, with the sound off to help you stay sane, and you just can't control the damn thing! The control system is disgraceful - nothing seems right, the handling of the monster trucks is so poor that you may as well be driving a safeway trolley, and the stages are so mind numbingly boring that you could very easily lose your mind. Graphically it's not too bad, but it's hardly a revelation - looks a bit grainy at times, but the refresh rate and frame is superb - very fast, that's the only other plus point along with the multiplayer - which is actually fun at times - bomb tag etc - popping balloons, great fun, ahem. Four Wheel Thunder has a lousy presentation, boring cars and is less appealing than what that car eats, but there will be some that buy it, like me, and it's a shame that we listen to the 'experts' who write the reviews, but never mind, at the end of the day - it's only a game, a very lame, boring and frustratingly difficult one at that. Cheers again, Jest

I have to say, when i first bought my dreamcast and i was looking at what particular bargain offer to get, none of the games, with the exception of sonic adventure tickled my fancy, so it was a case of pick the best other 3 out of the selection that i ewas offered. Well hey presto, 4 wheel thunder was one of the games that i picked. When i first got the game, i thought it would be bad to average, considering i had got it because it was better that chu chu rocket which was a game i was dead against getting. To my surprise, and a nice one at that, the game was actually a pretty decent game, even though expectations were low it easily exceeded them. The game consists of absolutely loads of tracks, which you earn by winning on the arcade and career modes. This is the same principle with the cars, the more races you win or do well in, the more and better cars you get. There is also a practice mode where you can learn the tracks that you have gained, and also race in practice races. The graphics are sharp and fast when you play, and when you get the traditional turbos, or speed ups, found in all classic race games the games can be pretty hair raising, especially if, like me, it is an extreme rarity that you use brakes. There are both indoor and outdoor races in th4e game, the indoor series consists of shorter races with more jumps etc in them, almost like motocross races, whereas the outdoor series races are much longer and more difficult in my view. Anyway, to sum up, 4 wheel thunder is an excellent game considering both its age and it's price, the graphics are good and play is fast.

4 Wheel Thunder is a racing game that has you driving massive monster trucks and smaller 4wd cars around dusty tracks and mud filled circuits as well as a few indoor arenas. It's pretty much a normal racing game, but with the addition of picking up turbo bonuses which you can use at will to give you a speed boost. You'll certainly need all the turbos you can get though, this game is not just tough, it's virtually impossible at times. I really believe that the reason it's called 4 wheel Thunder is that you will certainly storm off after the first few games on this, probably eminating much blue language while you are doing so. Give it a chance though and you will find ways of beating the incredibly tough opposition to the winning post. At this point you will be jumping for joy as you've past yet another course and unlocked a new one (and possibly worn your fingers down to the bone in the process, it really does take that long) Although the game gives you a sense of acheivement after completing a course, it seems to be at too high a cost, the other racers always seem to be one step ahead of you and one false move means that you can forget winning the race altogether. After a while you find yourself having to stop playing as your hands ache too much and your fingers are going red. Graphics wise, the game is pretty smart. All the courses are clear and the background scenery is nicely detailed, without getting in the way of the visibility of the tracks themselves. Sound is so-so and the music is pretty much your standard racing fare. If you fancy a difficult game to give you a challenge, then this is a great game to pick up. But if you're the kind of person who wants to win after 3 or 4 goes then forget it! This is for serious racers only, prefereably with steel fingers.

some people say that computer games are for people with nothing better to do and there probably right I really don't have anything to do so I have become the ultimate games reviewer the game Im really talking about is 4 wheel thunder its graphics are great and even thougth my freind who never played it before started to beat me after the 2nd try I still love the game Even if you don't have a dreamcast you can find the arcade version which is pretty much the same to liven up your sad and miserable life.

          Disadvantages

4 Wheel Thunder is a very difficult and frustrating game to play, so if you don't mind starting a race where all the other drivers are as far as a half a lap in front of you and the only way to keep up with them is to hit every booster icon and find every shortcut then this game is for you. But if not then I suggest you go out and buy Hydro Thunder, as that is a lot better in terms of gameplay than this. This game has superb graphics but the best graphics in the world doesn't mean anything if the overall gameplay and enjoyment is next to nothing.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

4 Wheel Thunder is the most frustrating game I have ever had the unpleasant misfortune of owning. It may well LOOK quite nice, and may well have been given 8/10 by 2 leading Dreamcast magazines, but if the game has a rubbish concept and is a Dog to play then why bother. The game boasts that over 60 cars are available, but here's the fun part - you have to access them by winning every race in the game which is absolutely impossible, and then even if you finish 2nd out of 12 the annoying game voice shouts abusively at you 'YOU LOSE'. In my opinion it's the game that loses, I've had it for a week now and in my view the game sucks. There's no reward for skill as the tracks are way too tight to turn in and the only way to win is by using ALL the power ups in the game. I honestly deteste this game and I warn you all now not to buy it. I'm off to trade this one in - I'm glad I won it from Special Reserve - if I'd splashed out 40 quid then I'd never be able to live with myself. Now I have sold the game and I have no regrets about it - it's a game that you either like or hate or don't really care about - and, although the game looked alright - I really think Midway gave us a poor game here.

This is certainly one of the best DC racers, and is fast and fun. It’s a buggy title, where you get to drive big funny looking trucks with big funny looking wheels. There are a lot of different game modes to choose from which helps the longevity of the game. It is rather similar to it’s sister game, Hydro Thunder (the Boosts, the shortcuts etc.), and I wouldn’t recommend getting both, however if you don’t have a DC racer already then I would recommend either, with this title possibly having the edge due to better level design and a little more variation. While this doesn’t put the likes of V-Rally 2 to shame it is a lot of fun, especially in some of the multiplayer modes. Big, brash and not afraid to show it, this is the Liz Taylor of the DC racing world to V-Rally’s Catherine Zeta Jones (and Crazy Taxi’s Bjork.)

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

After enjoying the teeth gnashingly tricky Hydro Thunder last year, I read in some game magazine that "Four Wheel Thunder", a sort of sequel, had eased up on the difficulty level. Hooray! I thought. Unfortunately this was a porky. This game is very, very tough. For your money you get lovely 60fps visuals, lush courses and blistering speed throughout. As in Hydro Thunder, you must collect the 4-second and 9-second booster pills to get anywhere at all. The racing is a constant 'catch-em-up' (a la Ridge Racer); this is where I've come a little unstuck. Powering around these courses in my souped-up oversized truck at breakneck speeds (barely making a mistake), is just not enough to finish in the top 2 or 3. Very annoying. So there you have it, a great looking (and feeling) game, somewhat spoilt by a difficulty level designed for people with a lot of time on their hands (and a cast iron resolve).
