Disadvantages: Intermissions can be annoying,, site occasionally slow,, American based

This site gives you the opportunity to win big money by playing online games and is part of the Lycos Network.

After joining the Lycos Network and logging in to Gamesville for the first time you are remembered on future visits and do not need to log in each time. All of the games are completely free to enter but offer cash prizes if you are lucky enough to win, some as high as $10,000. Although the prizes are in US Dollars, UK players are welcome and are eligable to win the cash. Lycos can afford to pay out these large sums by selling advertising space to sponsors who’s adverts are shown during the games and in regular intermissions between games.

The games are grouped into seven different categories with a prize awarded for winning any one of the games in the group or a different amount for each game in the group. The amount that can be won increases either every game it is not won or by landing upon some element of the game. The screen displays the name of the most recent winner in that game group and the date they won the prize. It is likely that a game with a payout of around $10,000 will not have been won for around six months. Other games with a smaller prize of $1,000 have been won as recently as 6th June so it does not take a very long time for the amount to build up.

The seven groups of games are made up of a total of thirty six individual games. These range from cards to roulette to strategy games and it is a case of trial and error to find a game that you enjoy. Most of the ones I have tried so far have been OK and quite addictive. Big Easy Blackjack, for example, is based around the traditional game of Blackjack (Pontoon) with a points target. When the game starts you have to select how many points you wish to play on each game, between nil and ten. There are three hands to choose from with the following playing options for each, all in American terms:-

Stand (Stick)
Hit (Twist)
Split 1 or
2 (If both cards are the same)

Each option is given a colour which relates to different odds:-

Blue = Evens
Green = 2/1
Yellow = 3/1
Red = 4/1

Before selecting your option you can see what the dealers first card is but you only have a limited time to make your choice. After making your selection the screen changes, all hands are finished and a box displays showing whether you have won or not. There are fourteen hands played in each full game and you need to get up to 500 points from a starting position of 150 points to get the money. The nearest I’ve got in about a week or so of occasional playing is 470 points.

Hopefully this description gives you an idea of what the Gamesville site is like and what you have to do to win some cash.

Obviously it is highly unlikely that you will actually win on Gamesville but somebody has got to win and the games are good fun anyway.

If you fancy giving it a go, the address is www.gamesville.lycos.com.

I joined gamesville a few weeks ago, and you are right, it can be addictive, but I can't help wondering if the names of the winners are real.good op
