      Thumbs in the middle

"American Dragon: Jake Long - Rise of the Huntsclan" is a video game released for the Gameboy Advance in 2006 by Buena Vista Games. It is based on a popular American animated series of the same name. In the United States, the game received a rating of "E" by the ESRB panel which deemed it suitable for all ages.

Gameplay reflects a typical side scrolling fighting title. Players guide the main character Jake Long on an adventure to eliminate all opposing forces in aims of preventing world domination by an enemy known as the "Huntsman". It is a very simple fighting title where Jake is implemented by only one button to release his onslaught of common punches and kicks. By successfully completing numerous battles, Jake will earn energy points which allow him to transform into the "American Dragon" for a limited time period. During this Jake will spawn into a large red dragon who is invulnerable. It can be a particularly useful power-up during periods of heavy attack by numerous enemies. In a somewhat roleplaying game effect, Jake can also receive experience points to "level up" certain statistics like health and attack strength.

The graphics of this title feature their original lustre seen in the television series with excellent and well detailed animations. There are a wide variety of enemies which Jake will encounter and each feature exceptional detailing, especially in the facial regions as each portray aggression and dismay. The audio is also of a good standard but only features basic musical scores and sound effects. It could perhaps have improved the game to implement voiceovers to keep in touch with the television series.

Overall, American Dragon is a simple beat 'em up "button masher" which offers little difficulty to the player. It is difficult to suggest appeal in this game but could perhaps be seen as entertaining in shorter, more frequent bursts.
