Arkanoid 2 is surprisingly the sequel to Arkanoid. Not surprised? Well I guess they gave it away in the originality of the title once again but of course it is the gameplay which you care about not the title so we'll let them off this time. And yes, it has gameplay by the bucketload, despite looking as boring as hell on the surface. Arkanoid, Arkanoid 2, Breakout, Megaball...etc. are all 'bat and ball' style games. You have a wall of bricks, a ball and a 'paddle' with the idea being to hit your ball against the wall knocking out the bricks until they are all gone in order to progress on to the next level. Yawning yet? Well ok there is a little more to it than just that. When you hit certain bricks you'll get a power-up, which may be something like extendig your paddle, splitting your ball into three, or the best one in this version being the laser, which gives your paddle a gun toting armoured coating to blast the bricks away. Also lurking above the bricks are aliens(well strange shaped things, the ealiest resembling ice-cream cones) which are released once you have broken through the final layer and generally hamper you as you try to keep your ball in play. When the ball hits the bottom of the screen because you missed it then you lose a life, knock out all the bricks and you are on to the nect level. OK, so it sounds as boring as hell, but trust me it isnt. Arkanoid 2 improves little over the original but offers more power-ups different setting and aliens and slighlty more polished graphics - everything else is the same. It would have been good to have had a level editor included but there never was so you have to put up with the ones they have designed, but that is just a minor gripe. Its probably one of the most addicting and frustrating games I have played on the Amiga and you'll spend many hours cursing and swearing at your screen should you ever purchase(hunt out and download) it. I ummm think it was fun, not too
sure thinking of the amount of cursing and swearing that went on whilst playing it, but it was certainly a good way to waste some time if you had some to kill that is for sure. Worth another look if you need yet another addictive computer experience.
