A racing classic, Colin McRae Rally was way ahead of its time. Great handling, and the selection of cars, courses and varying weather conditions made it a very realistic and exciting game to play.

“I said I was sorry”, chirps the meek-looking gentleman in the blue crash helmet. “I don’t care”, you reply indignantly. “I’m not talking to you. You could have easily told me where on the road the post was, instead of just telling me there was a post somewhere on the road.” “But…”, your co-driver begins to protest. You hold up a silencing hand - “Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah… go away. You’re fired.” Okay, so Colin McRae Rally from Codemasters didn’t go so far as to show you taking the huff with your inept co-driver, but it pretty much did everything else. Unleashed upon an unsuspecting public a mere two years ago on PlayStation (and later PC), CMR heralded a new age of racer – the realistic rally game. V-Rally from Infogrames was an exciting enough title but it still involved traditional lap-based, head-to-head racing, as did Tommi Makkinen Rally, Rally Cross (also on PlayStation) and Top Gear Rally (N64). CMR gave the world true rally action – race alone to cover the course in the shortest possible time. Your times from all the stages are totted up and the driver with the lowest time wins. Simple. Except it wasn’t. CMR provided a challenge of epic proportions. With V-Rally, the challenge lay in the twitchy handling of the cars: once you got used to the handling the rest of the game was a bit of a breeze. CMR demanded you master your vehicle’s handling and then master it all over again for a completely new terrain. The open gravel and mud stages in New Zealand provided a challenge a million miles away from the tyre-destroying narrow tarmac surfaces of Corsica. Adapting your driving style rally to rally (sometimes even stage to stage) was only part of the fun. Eight vastly different rallys in all. Up to eight stages per rally. It adds up to a whole lot of rallying. Along with the actual rally champions
hip, you could opt for an obligatory time trial, or a fairly nifty two-player option – you either took it in turns to better each other’s times or went head-to-head in some literal crash-bang-wallop action. If you’ve ever played a Codemasters racer before (hello, TOCA) you’d expect the graphics and sound to be of the very highest quality. CMR doesn’t disappoint. Even in the overnight pit-stops, where you’re given 60 minutes to repair your car before the next two stages, you can hear other teams fixing their cars and shouting orders to each other. CMR wasn’t perfect, of course. Occasionally, your co-driver would tell you there’s a heavy corner approaching a mere half a millisecond before you went ploughing into it at ninety miles an hour. Also, he’d warn you of an imminent obstacle like rocks or a wooden post but he’d never tell you where on the track the obstacle was. Codemasters' insistence on including a stupid, unrealistic points-to-progress system (something they only finally ditched for TOCA World Touring Cars) also reared it’s ugly, unwanted head. But it can all be forgiven simply because Colin McRae Rally is still one of the finest racing simulations ever produced. From the heart-stopping moment you attempt your first hairpin bend to the roller-coaster “Bobsleigh Run” on Sweden’s stage 5 to the range of classic rally cars available as hidden bonuses, CMR should have been packaged with an special peripheral to help you prise your fingers off the joypad. Now out on Platinum (with a new and pretty but also pretty useless in-car view), CMR is a title no self-respecting race fan should be without. So what if you’ve got the sequel – how can you appreciate The Empire Strikes Back if you’ve never seen Star Wars?!?

Colin McRae Rally is a great game that has earned its weight in platinum (or gold). The graphics are really good and the controls are just the same as all the other racing games. There are plenty different modes to choose from. If you are new on the game I would advise you to go out to the driving school option, this shows you how to do everything and gives you allot of practice before you start a championship. There are plenty different cars to chose from but the ones you get at the start are the best. This game has a really nice realistic feel to it when you play. The timing is down the hundredth of a second, and nearly after every race you get time to fix up your car after you’ve bashed it around the coarse. If the car is bashed about enough you will see and fell (rumble thing) the difference to the handling. If you like cheats the are plenty of them for this game (just look on www.Pscheats.com) All round this is a great game and since the release of the second Colin McRae Rally this game has gone down in price to £10.99 (well that’s what I saw in WH Smiths).

Colin McRae is a world famous rally car driver and now has his very own game called "Colin McRae Rally", like Tony hawk with his new skateboarding game. But my friends, this is a one of a kind game with realistic controls and superb graphics. The quality of this racing car game is, well, the best I have ever played for the world known playstation. Even if you don't like racing games this is the one for you because I doesn’t take much time to master the controls so you can sit back and relax behind your 220 horse power V8 engine and still be in your living room on your favourite sofa. Enjoy!

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

Colin McRae Rally is one of the best racing games I have ever played, and now particularly it is on budget at a very reasonable price I would urge anyone who is slightly interested in motor sport or any racing related computer games to get out and buy it! Before you feel like trying to mix with the big boys for real in the rally championship why not try a course at Colin's Rally school? This could have been done better, but you can get the basics like hand break turns done to perfection. Still nothing beats racing for real and the school if truth were told is pretty lame. There are a total of 56 tracks spread through actual countries in the world rally championship, including Australian, Monte Carlo, New Zealand, Greece, Corsica, UK, Indonesia and Sweden. The later stages are locked at the beginning, so you have to win some of the rallies before you can race in all of them. There are three difficulty settings, easy intermediet and expert. On easy you can only race two wheel drive cars like the Skoda Felicia or Reuault Megane, but you get the full choices of cars on the other two settings, including Colin McRae’s Subaru. Other cars include Toyota, Mitsubishi and Ford Escort. All handle reasonably well and realistically, and you can begin to feel the power slides. A good touch is realism of each stage, like you are constantly sliding in the snow in Sweden, fighting rain and mud in England or dust in Greece and Australia. Other big pluses on the game are the excellent graphics, particularly background scenery, but can eat up frame rate, and the instruction of your co-driver yelling key phrases to guide you. You do need to pay attention to these, particularly 'don't cut corners'. They do mean this, and do not try and cut them. He does give good advice and it is worth it to plan three corners ahead. Overall Colin McRae Rally must be up along with V-Rally and Sega Rally as best rally games of all time, and in my opinion is
the best of the lot. I do not own Colin McRae 2, but see no point, I am happy with this; it gives me all I want from a rally game, action, speed, game play and graphics. Also with having to unlock the remaining levels it leaves hours of fun, so the games longitiviity is great. The game is pretty simple on easy setting, just so you can get the feel of the game in some of the less powerful cars, and intermediate and expert will provide a real challenge and keeps the game going. Now it is out on budget I would really recommend anyone to buy it.

General/Summary: Absolutely the best Rally game available! If you like rally racing at all, you've gotta check this one out - the PC version is even better. I really like this game, If you can't tell. I've tried many rally games - none comes close to this one. Gameplay: Great. Various stages in each city, and each one presents a different challenge. Snow, rain gravel, pavement - and the driving dynamics are realistic in all aspects - you can even use the handbreak to slide through tight turns. You get split times, and the co-driver instructions are just like the real thing. Wish there were a few more car choices. Smooth gameplay. the different weather conditions can be difficult to master. Graphics: Perfect for me - not to 3-d glitzy, or trying to be overly high-res - but very good and informative in terms of scenery, obsticles, etc. Graphics don't bog the game down. Sound: Again - great. Realistic engine sounds - you can even hear the turbo blow-off valve pop when you let off the gas! gravel and road sounds - it all involves you in the game. And best of all is the co-driver audio - clear, easy to understand instructions are called out by the navigator while you drive - and he makes the calls at the right times, too.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

Colin McRae rally is an excellent game, so lets get that out of the way to start with. The graphics on the game are very good, especially considering the age of the game and of the console it is running on. Lets be honest, the Playstation is getting on in years, but it still seems to be able to hold its own. The sound on the game isn`t too impressive - it is good enough but it isn`t amazing. It does the job, letting you know what is happening, but I can`t imagine a real Rally car sounding exactly like this. The gameplay itself is really good, one of the best racing games I`ve played. The game engine is very good, it feels like you`re actually driving the car rather than pretending to drive the car. Since this game has been replaced by newer games, you`ll be able to picjk this up for a bit less money than when it first came out. To be honest you might be better off buying the newer game, but if you`ve only got enough cash to buy this game then I doubt very much that you`ll be dissapointed/

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

It's obviously difficult to make a good racing simulation that also happens to be fun. Many a developer have gone over board on the realistic math behind the physics of any given motor sport and ended up offering a confounding and unrealistic reproduction of reality. The simple fact that a home video game can not, by its very nature, cover all aspects of whatever it is being simulated. Gameplay Ok, a rally sim. Right off the bat - and with that frightfully verbose pre-amble - it sounds too technical or finicky, doesn't it? Perhaps, but you must remember that the sport of rally racing, more than any other motor sport, is a rollick: a anarchistic, unconventional, messy journey from A to B. Rally is balls out fun! It's all about taking a car through hell, about busting the threshold of a vehicle's basic function and coercing it to feats of ludicrous punishment. Rally rocks, but until now, not a single PlayStation rally game was able to capture that perverse pleasure while still staying true to the adroitness and proficiency of real rally drivers (though Gran Turismo's rally mode sim is pretty sweet). This is no arcade crash-bang-smash'em-up, all flashy and forgiving and unrelentingly puerile, this is a (loose) sim based on the real life crash-bang-smash'em-up sport of off road racing in a Toyota with a death wish. Graphics A surprise offered up by Colin Rally is its superb "cockpit view." Many gamers, myself included, prefer a "chase camera" perspective which offers a better view of the road and the surrounding terrain (you can't turn your head to look around, after all), but here, the dashboard view offers a better-than-average representation of the road ahead, besides which, you have that astute and sharp-witted navigator (AKA "co-driver") calling out the immediate future and offering snippets of advice at any rate. But more importantly, the in-car view paints a simp
ly-drawn picture of your unsettled hands on the beleaguered steering wheel, hand dropping down to change gears or yank the e-brake. More than that, cockpit view offers all that unseemly rattle and hum of off-road pandemonium. With the tools in hand, Colin McRae Rally very much visually simulates the controlled chaos of rollicking down the road. Audio Not very much music in the game all you mostly here is the roar of the cars and the constant yapping of the passenger telling you what type of turn is coming up. Control The vibration function, unfortunately, misses the mark, for while it does try to emulates the subtle/gross tremble of a car on an erratic roadway - or a good solid thwack at key moments - the shock factor is often a little behind the mark or absent all together. I suspect a processing limitation more than neglect on the developer's part, as everything else seems so well attended, but the ill-timed vibration is a little distracting... Replayability Still, simply the best rally game out there and if it at all sounds too demanding or less than raw "arcade" racing fun, there's an in-game "rally school." Take the course. It's worth it. Rally will make you giddy, it's just that exciting. Colin McRae Rally simulates that fact as aptly as is possible on the PlayStation. Overall Anyway, Colin McRae Rally is a superb, accomplished video game based on the sport of rally racing. A rally "sim" in that loose sense of the word that does not require any effort on the part of the gamer to suspend disbelief simply because what it is able to simulate, it does so completely believably. Its Got No Main Contenders !

          Disadvantages

This game is the most realistic game I have ever played. I find that I forget that I'm not actually driving the car because the vibrations that it sends to dual chock controllers is so spot on. It is so easy to get immersed in this game that I find I drive the car based on the co-driver instructions rather than on what I actually see. This really is one of the best racing games around and loses nothing because there are no other cars ever seen. It's just you against the track. There's no overtaking, no backmarkers to deal with, just you, a co-driver and a rally car against forest, desert, mud and tarmac. It is better than it sounds and if you like rallying and like computer games, then you have to give this a go.

Colin McRae Rally is quite a good game. THe graphics are really good and the sound quality is excellent! I have found that the downside seems to be that it is limiting! I don't really know how but it really does just seem so limited. The races are great and the places are good to as well as the cars. The cars, I have found, are actually the best that I have driven on the playstation. I would recommend it but I have found it dull at times but Colin McRae Rally is a very good game anyway.

OK, V-rally, and other rally games, not too hot, the controls are sometimes unresponsive, graphics poor, and only the elite are realistic. Colin Mcrae however encorporates all of the rally drivers, all of the cars and all of the circuits. you can change everything on the car from the steering to the gear ratios. The control is very realistic, you can brake if you choos for corners, powerslide, or just let the walls guide you! the weather conditions have a real effect on the control, and make sure you drive well. The definitive rally game

If your looking for a realistic rally game look no further than this. Although getting slightly outdated this game would still reach my favorites list. This game dates back to the days when McCrae raced for Subaru. However, your not confined to this car. There is a selection of cars to opt for, each of them realistically created for the game. They all handle in a believable fashion and it takes a while to get used to the slippery surfaces. The tracts are well represented and the different surfaces and weather conditions add interest to the game. One of the harder conditions is night having only head lights to see. The sound effects are great and the voice of Colin's co driver adds the finishing touches.

Apologies for the title, but this is one of the best driving games for the Playstation. Its been surpassed by the excellent Gran Turismo 2 and its successor, CMR2, but considering its been about for a good few years there’s nothing wrong with that. This game was out at a time when Gran Turismo catered only for on-track driving, not the off-road courses introduced in GT2. The car handling is extremely good, the cars drift round corners realistically. In order to progress through the game, you have to pass a set of rally school tests, where Colin McRae, the great man himself, describes how to achieve the target time. In game, you are given directions by Nicky Grist, McRae’s real-life co-driver. This is a nice touch – you’ve always got someone telling you which way the road goes, and you really have to try and keep up with the directions, otherwise you’ll end up with a pretty battered car. One nice feature is that if you crash the car, it shows the damage. On muddy stages the car starts off perfectly clean, but by the end of the stage it will be plastered woth mud. This is maybe not the easiest driving game to get into, but its worth persevering with. Once you’ve got the hang of the cars handling, you’ll find its great fun to see just how fast you can get through each stage.

This is one of the best rally games ever brought out for the PSX. The graphics are sublime, the sound beautifully orchestrated, the gameplay superb, and the action truly intense. As you hurtle through the narrow forest stages you feel claustrophobic, as you clip a wall on the fast tarmac stages and go into a roll you nearly pop out of your chair, and with your co-driver shouting in your ear-hole the realism is perfect. The training section is an added bonus, so buy this game before the shops run out or you will regret it.
