"Majesco's Rec Room Challenge", informally known as Darts, Shuffle Bowling, Skiball, is a three in one video game released for the Gameboy Advance console in 2005 by Majesco. It is a sports game with darts, roll-a-ball and shuffle bowling being represented. In the United States, the game received a rating of "E" by the ESRB panel which deemed it suitable for all ages.
In my testing, I did not find there to be any obvious storyline surrounding this title. It is an arcade style game where the player is to compete against the computer opponent in aims of setting a high score. The game offers three modes of play to include darts, roll-a-ball and shuffle bowling. Each game is simple is play and only requires a brief few moments in becoming familiar with the method of play. Darts presents the most learning curve with the player being required to aim a crosshair and use a power gauge to accurately throw a dart at a specified point. It is not uncommon to either bounce off the dart board due to excessive force or not even make contact with the board due to too little force. Roll-a-ball and shuffle bowling are much easier in play in that the player must simply aim and select a certain level of power for the throw.
The graphics of this title are presented from a first person view of the character's hand and instrument being used (ball or arrow). The images are very bright, colourful and well rendered which makes for a good visual experience. Roll-a-ball offers the most gleaming images with certain coloured holes corresponding to a certain amount of points. The soundtrack is simple in comparison to the effort shown to the graphics with only suitable ambiance effects, such as pins falling in shuffling bowling, accompanying the player's experience.
Overall, Rec Room Challenge is a good compilation title which could appeal to a player in shorter bursts. To me it serves as a video game to pass a rainy afternoon indoors but is not otherwise played outside of the confined times.
