Advantages: price, its purple, its brilliant

Disadvantages: cooling fan makes some noise, Z button

Ah the Nintendo GameCube, what can I say! There is not a lot to drag this little gem down. Just look at the thing, it is without doubt the finest looking console ever made and its purple, just being purple is reason enough to buy one.

The latest console from Nintendo caters for all tastes, games are available to suit young kids and games are available to suit adults. The controller is superb, your hands mould around it in gaming perfection with only the rather silly Z button being a problem.

This is one bargain of a system at a staggeringly low £129 just how Nintendo managed to launch this product at that price is beyond many people but it was a tactic that?s worked. The Cube has sold more in its short life in Europe than the Xbox (its self a good machine) and thus ensures a supply of games for Nintendo?s now mandatory 5 year product life cycle. The unit comes with a joypad, external power supply and composite cables with a scart adaptor to connect it to the TV. Many would consider buying the proper RGB cable as the cube is capable of displaying PAL 60 and many games give an option to run in this. This means full screen and full speed games.

The UK unit has a full 2 year warranty which is a nice bonus so don?t let the salespeople talk you into an extended one.

The sound is DVD quality (sampled at 48Hz) and the graphics are simply a wonder to behold. Rogue Leader is like watching a Star Wars film, it is simply that good.

The games come on 3 inch discs and are packaged in modified DVD cases. These cost between £39.99 and £44.99 but are available on the internet for as little as £29.99 Inc P&P and my local game shop has used titles in already for £24.99.

No memory card is supplied and one is defiantly required to save your game position etc. the standard Nintendo one has 59 slots on it and costs a meagre £14.99.

The Cube doesn?t play DVD movies and it doesn?t have a hard drive this is a games console for ga
mers not a compromise.
