If this were a good game, I'd praise it. But I wont because it's crap. One day, there will be a good motorboat game, and to be frank, this isn't it. Hydro Thunder lacks even basic functions required for good games - innovation, options, thrills and creativity are all lacking in this wonderfully flawed spectacle of the water-racing genre. Originally released in the arcades, Hydro 'Thin'der has subsequently joined the Dreamcast, Playstation and N64. The combination of a rushed and multi-format release has diminished this games already low score. The linear aspect of the game also reduces the score, e.g. Enter the only available race; Finish 5; No other tracks are unlocked; get frustrated that you can't come above 5th; sell the game. Paying 30 quid for a solid straight line isn't fun. Although the graphics are reasonable (for the arcades) and likewise the sound, Hydro Thunder deserves to be shelved and kept for the arcades. Period. Advantages: Arcade Feel Disadvantages: Too Linear IanJC
Hydro Thunder is made by the same people as 4 Wheel Thunder, it's all in the name and it's all in the game - very similar styles of gameplay, which is a good thing, but I do prefer Hydro Thunder to the offroad, but onland racer. Hydro would suggest the game has something to do with power from water, and thats exactly what it's about. Powerful water boats that look like futuristic flying machines, for you to take control of and steer to victory with the handy use of power ups. I don't always like games with power ups, they all seem to be blatent rip offs of Mario Kart on the SNES/N64. Hydro Thunder is nothing like Mario Kart though, except for the emphasis being on winning races. And you will have a great time beating your lap times on some brilliant courses. The track design is fantastic - they're lots of hidden short cuts to be found, some very interestingly thought up levels. Impressive. The boats handle well, the controls are easy and intuitive to pick up, so if you're not quite that great at gaming, you shouldn't have a troubled time here. A good selection of boats too, and the graphics are reasonably impressive. This is a PlayStation game at heart, but it was a superb PlayStation game and now Dreamcast owners have the chance to play it. Overall, if you can get this for less than £10 which you should be able to do then you'll be satisfied. The game is pure adrenaline on water, it's one of the fastest and most fun games around, you should definitely buy it!! Underated bliss.
A lot of people don't take notice of this game. But up and down through the countries bargain bins you will find this game at a very cheap price (£7 in my local EB). So basically you drive your boat down rivers and have to win the race, blah blah blah. However this game differs to the other hundred Dreamcast racers by: 1) Being on water, it has a very different physics engine 2) Nifty boost system The water theme seperates this from the competition, so you won't have to go back to yet another boring street racing game. Scattered around the track are boost power ups, collect these to add to your boost meter. Holding down the boost button gives you a nice increase in speed. This means that the game requires a bit more thought that your average racer. Graphically, this game is top-notch. It isn't the best on the console for making your friends jealous, but it's still rather lovely. Sounds are decent too. The game is divided into 3 sections, easy, medium and difficult. The first level sees you racing down an icy river against about 20 opponents. Along with other racers, you will find other people on the rivers such as jet skiiers, cruise boats and police! As you progress through the game new levels and boats unlock. The developers have done a good job here, the boats look stunning and each one handles differently. Another good feature of this game is the "boost jump". Doing a quick combo on your joypad makes your boat jump up into the air to reveal new shortcuts (ooh and there's no shortage of them either). The problem I have with this game is the difficulty. I've played this for hours yet still I can't finish first in any of the races. Call me a fool if you will, but this game is god damn hard. I hope this doesn't put people off because they will be missing out on one of the best racers on the/any console. If you are off put by the boat racing t
heme (but really it's decent), 4-Wheel Thunder is another game in the series which may interest you, though in my opinion this is much better.
