      great game

      Mario Party 5 was the 2nd game on the gamecube of the series, and I believe was a good improvement from MP4. This game is pretty similar to the rest of the Mario Party series in overall gameplay and style.

      Instead of being hosted by Mario characters, it is hosted by a group of stars with different names. There is a star for party mode, single player mode, super duel mode, bonus mode, and mini-game mode.

      Super Duel Mode is new to the mario party series. In this mode, you build a tank from parts you buy in a store with stars you've earned during gameplay. You can battle the CPU, or another human player in this mode. This doesn't have any significance, but it's fun!

      Bonus mode is also a lot of fun. There are 3 games, card, hockey, and volleyball. Again, these are just games to play that have nothing to do with anything

      One change in MP5 was the addition and removal of some playable characters. They removed DK, but added Toad, and mini-bowser. DK still plays a role in the game since he was upgraded to his own space on the board. If you land on one of the DK spaces, you play either a single or multiplayer mini game where you win an amount of coins, or even a star!

      This is also the first of the mario party series that did away with the items, and replaced them with capsules. In Mario Party 5, you pass a spot that looks like a large gumball machine, and it spits out a "capsule" There are many different capsules, and each does its own specific job. While the capsules are free, you have to pay to use them on yourself, or throw them either 10 spaces in front or behind you on the map for free.

      Another great feature of this game is the length of gameplay for a party mode. The minimum amount of turns is 10, and the maximum is 50. This allows you to play a really quick game when you're pressed for time, or a long game when you have nothing else to do. The boards are traditional to the other mario parties where you acquire the star for 20 coins, and it moves to a different spot after a player purchases it.

      There is no "boo" space, since he is actually a playable character now. There is a chain chomp orb that will still stars/coins for you (you have to pay to use it, plus the fee to steal).

      After the game, it's still the same 3 bonus stars (if you played with bonus stars on). However, this Mario party wanted to get more fancy in its detailed results and provide line graphs of coins and stars. You can see how you went up and down in coins/stars throughout the game. While this is pretty much useless, people who love statistics (like myself), really liked to analyze the charts.

      Overall, Mario Party 5 was another great hit in the series. This is a must play for anyone continuing the series, as well as new players alike.

      If you plan to play with friends then this is a good game to have

      Board games have always been a family tradition at my house. Monopoly, Pay Day, you name it, we've played it. Then I noticed Mario Party 5 with its extremely fun mini-games, cute characters and colourful boards and I thought to myself, "Wow this looks fun!"

      Mario has now hung up his platforming boots and put on his party hat ready to take part in some four player madness. The basic concept for the Mario Party series has always been to move around a crazy "board" collecting coins and stars while also taking part in fun mini games after every round. Also thrown into the formula are random spaces that trigger events such as losing coins, stealing stars and trading spaces that add the element of surprise to the game. It's a simple yet very effective idea and leads to some extremely fun multiplayer moments.

      Now firstly, the mini games. They are a mixed bag to be honest, but when you come across a good one you'll know it and you really will love it and want to play it again and again. Games range from skill based ones such as dodging a load of stampeding penguins to button bashers and luck based ones where you are required to guess which pot a flying shy-guy is in. It's a nice varied set of about 50 games, but as I've said, some are a little dull and less fun than others.

      The "boards" or levels you move around on are very nicely illustrated and much more 3D than the boring flat "boards" of Mario Party 4. They lead you up ladders, over sweets and into spaceships making for a nicely crafted experience. Mario, Peach, Yoshi and co are back again and the character list has increased a little too and while it's not amazing news, it's still nice to see the likes of Toad and Koopa playable.

      The graphics are nice, bold and colourful however lack serious detail so it's basically what you've come to expect from a Mario game. The music is also cheerful and happy which matches the game itself perfectly with a few decent tracks to listen to while you play.

      The game is obviously not designed for playing alone, and that is its main letdown. Sure it's fun for the first few days' but after that playing the computer will seem boring, repetitive and less of a challenge. However what saves this game is it's multiplayer possibilities. Play in teams, all against all and even practice mini games together, it's all extremely fun.

      Mario Party 5 improves on its original in some ways such as; the new capsule use where in order to trigger events you use these; or the new story mode that makes single player a little more fun, but it's also let down in other areas. For one the gameplay is too slow. Texts and animations take far too long meaning you need good patience to play this game. And also the the rubbish mini games and lack of single player fun let the game down in what could have been an awesome game.

      But Mario Party 5 remains a true classic when it comes to multiplayer. However if you don't plan to play this with friends, give it a miss.

      Well worth buying

      Mario Party 5 was the second Mario Party game to be released on for the Gamecube, and it was the first Mario Party game I bought for this console. It was released in 2003.The game only uses 5 blocks of memory to save progress, so if, like me, you don't have a lot of memory left on any memory cards, you can most likely still save progress with this game.

      When you start playing you are introduced to the place known as Dream Depo, where there are stars who guide you through the different modes. I'll explain these modes in detail later.

      There are more characters in this game than in Mario Party 2, with 9 to choose from rather than 6: Mario, Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, Peach, Daisy, Yoshi, Toad, Boo and Mini Bowser.
      Whichever character you choose this doesn't make a difference to how successful you will be in the game, it just means you can pick your favourite or try them all out. Not all characters are available on all modes however.

      The game boards are: Toy Dream, Rainbow Dream, Pirate Dream, Undersea Dream, Future Dream, Sweet Dream and Bowser's Nightmare, which must be unlocked. Each board is unique, not only in design, but also with different things that happen eg. if you land on a ? space on Sweet Dream, the cake beneath you will be sliced and taken to another place on the board.

      You can play on the game boards in two modes: a single player and a multiplayer mode. With multiplayer, you can choose to make two teams of two who will work together to gain as many stars and coins as possible, or just play against all the other three characters. There is also the story mode, where you play alone against three mini-Bowsers who are trying to take over the dreams. This is a great improvement on previous games, as instead of having to watch all the other characters turns, each mini-Bowser goes at once and if they come across you, you must duel them. The main weakness of the multiplayer mode is that you can't skip watching the other players turns. Instead, when playing alone you have to watch and wait until it's your turn, which is boring and time consuming.However, playing with friends is much more fun.

      On the board game modes, you each roll a dice at the beginning to see who will go first. Whoever rolls the highest number will start. Then you roll a dice to see how many spaces you can move. After every player has moved, a mini-game is played. The type of mini-game (4 player, 2 vs 2, 1 vs 3) is determined by the colours of the spaces players have landed on. As with previous games, the colours are red and blue, with blue spaces adding three coins to your total and red deducting three. The coins are used to buy stars, which cost 20 coins each. The winner at the end is the player with the most stars.

      As well as red and blue spaces, there are also other which if you land on, will turn you green. At the end of the turn, your colour is then determined randomly. If all players are one colour, the game is a 4 player. If two players are blue and the other two red, then it is a 2 vs 2, where you work in teams. If one player is a different colour from the rest, then you play a 1 vs 3 game, where three work in a team to beat the other player. There are also battle games, where coins are collected from each player and the winner gets most of them. Duel games are played with two characters only, and Bowser games are played with all characters. There are also Donkey-Kong games. Donkey-Kong appears to help you out when you land on his space on the board.

      Instead of buying items on the board games, you get capsules, which are received free but you have to pay when you use them. Wit capsules, you can change spaces so that something will happen when someone lands on it eg. Chain Chomp will appear to steal coins for you from other players or a bob-omb will appear to take your coins away. You get capsules from capsule machines, which are placed at different places around the boards.

      Since there are so many mini-games, it would take me forever to describe them all, so I'll give a couple of examples from each type of mini-game.

      4 Player: Hotel Goomba. In this game you go through three rooms filled with goombas, and must move them in a certain order so that you can pass through each room. The fastest one to the top wins the game.

      Coney Island: In this game, scoops of ice cream fall from the sky and you have to collect as many as you can on your cone. You collect them by watching for shadows of falling scoops, and then standing underneath them.

      2 vs 2: Clock Stoppers: Here you and your partner must work together to change the clock face so that it shows the same time as on the one above. Quite hard to do when working with a computer character as you can’t tell which hand they are going to change.

      ID UFO: In this game, you can your partner have to slam down on the two squares whose pictures match the alien spaceships flying at the window. You have to get the squares right, and hit them at the same time.

      1 vs 3: Big Top Drop: This involves one character trying to knock the other three players off a tightrope in a circs tent by throwing balls at them. The single player wins by knocking all players off, and only one of the three needs to survive in order for the team to win.

      Duel Games: Piece Out: It's like Tetris, but sideways. You pick up different coloured blocks from the conveyor belt and arrange them so that they cover your whole space. The more blocks of the same colour arranged together, the more points you gain. The winner is the player with the most points at the end.

      Get A Rope: There are three ropes to choose from. Pulling one will cause a huge weight to land on you, the other two are safe but only one of them will win the game for you. The results are totally random, there’s no strategy to this game.

      Battle Games: Astro-Logical: In this game, players are given a limited time to find a tile, each with astrological symbols on them, which match the one at the top. You don’t get long to find it, and it’s quite tricky.

      DK Games: (There are only three of these) Da Vine Climb: Players climb up vines and have to collect as many bananas as possible on the way up. There are obstacles in the way which force you to switch from vine to vine on the way.

      Bowser Games: (Again, there are only three of these) Scaldin’ Cauldron: Players choose which cauldron to hide in by pressing A, B or X, and then Bowser will come in and breath fire on two random cauldrons.

      Mini games can be played in both Party and Story Mode, but also in Mini-Game Mode where you can choose to play any unlocked mini-games. You only have to play them on Party Mode to unlock them. There are then six options, where you can just choose to play any game, and several ways of battling other players in mini game tournaments.

      Super Duel Mode involves building your own battle machine. It’s a mode that I haven’t used yet myself. One or two people can play in this mode, and you name the machines you create. They are then used in battles against each other.

      Bonus Mode allows you to play against other characters in either a Card Party, Beach Volleyball or Ice Hockey. Options Mode is where you change game settings, listen to game music and voices and view game records.

      Overall, this game is a brilliant addition to the Mario Party series. It has more modes than Mario Party 2, and a great selection of all-new mini-games. It’s very easy to play, so anyone who hasn’t played Nintendo games before will find the controls easy to get used to. It’s a great game to play with friends, especially when four of you can play. Alone it isn’t as much fun, but the Story Mode makes playing much faster and less boring. Fans of other Mario Party games will not be disappointed with this game as, although very similar to previous games, it is definitely an improvement on them when it comes to the different things you can do.

      I highly recommend this game to anyone as it is suitable for ages 3+, but that doesn’t mean it is a game for children only. People of all ages will enjoy playing this, and it will give you hours of entertainment.

      I bought mine 2nd hand for about £12 from Amazon Marketplace. It’s available new, at prices of round about £17. £17 is the most you should be paying for a new copy, and I haven’t found any new copies at prices lower than this.

        NOT the best release...fun mini-games

        Before I start I wanna let you know I hava all Mario Party releases, and they're hell of fun...with your friends, alone is kinda... entertaining. Anyway, this' what the series' all about: some part of The Mushroom Kingdom (in this release the Dream Depot) is in trouble, so Mario has the brilliant idea of solving it with the Stars' power, and he couldn't imagine another way to get them more than partying! The main way to play is by moving through game boards, looking for the star to buy it.You buy 'em with coins, won in different, fun mini-games.I`m gonna explain every game mode now:

        Party mode: After Choosing your settings,the main way to play is by moving through game boards, looking for the star to buy it.You buy 'em with coins, won in different, fun mini-games.Aftwer the set amount of turns is over, the player with the most stars and coins wins. This is so fun with your friends, and kinda fun alone. Score:4/5

        Mini-game mode: Here, you can play all the mini-games you've found in other modes in different ways: Free Play, MG race, MG Wars, MG Battle, MG Duel and many others. I feel the same as Party Mode with this one:great with friends, good alone. Score:4/5

        Story Mode: Follow the story as you play through different boards in this single-player mode. Not exactly the best, but you'll hava some fun thanks to the dad-son talks between Bowser and Koopa Kid. Score:3.2/5

        Options Mode: You know what to do here: set the overall game's settings to your tastes: Audio, Rumble, etc. You can also listen to the game's usic.

        Super Duel Mode: Original mode through all the saga: Design your battle car buying car parts with points you earn by playing mini-games,and pay in different tournaments, lije Battleor Bunny Tournaments.If you watch Pimp My Ride, you'll like this. Not bad.Score:3.8/5

        Extra Mode: This mode features three mini-games which can't be played anywhere else but here. The mini-games are great. This one deserves to be checked out.Score:4/5

        Now let's go to the technological part:

        Graphics:Good, fun, happy, colorful, fluid and Mario-esque. What Mario players are used to see. Score:4.8/5

        Sound: They're pretty good and go with the whole game's feeling, but sometimes they're childish and repetitive. Score:4/5

        Now other facts:

        Durability: If you're a long-time player it'll last two weeks. If you're not, 1 month. Score:3/5

        Fun Factor: Just fine alone, but look for some friends and have one of a kind time!!!Score: 4/5

        This is NOT the best of the series but it deserves a check. Buy it if you liked previous Mario Parties or if you're a Mario fan.

          Mario Party 5 is a great game with brilliant graphics and outstanding game play but how does it stand out from the other four Mario Party's? Well for one thing the graphics are better and you can really see the expressions of the characters. The sound may not become Nintendo classic but fits comfortably around the game. The game play is amazing the mini games could be games in their own right and as there is so much to discover in the game it should last you a few months to complete. One issue with this game is the item system which can be a bit difficult to grasp especially for younger players. The plot The story is simple, Bowser and his son Mini Bowser have broken into the Land of Dreams and as usual want to cause havoc. This time Bowser wants to steal and take over a dream to create his own nightmare. Luckily Mario and his friends are here to save the day (phew) but it's up to you to guide them through dreamland and beat Bowser. When you first switch on this game you will be greeted with a list of modes. Story Mode The story starts with Mini Bowser splitting into three parts - now the game begins. The game is set out like a board game. You and Bowser take it in turns to "throw the dice". Different coloured/character spaces have different consequences. If during this time you pass a mini Bowser or a mini Bowser passes you, you will have to duel with it in a mini game. By duelling with a mini Bowser you will reduce it's coin totals. The aim of this game is to reduce all three of the mini Bowsers coin totals to 0 before 15 turns have been taken. In this mode for every mini game played that game is unlocked to play whenever in mini game mode. Super Duel Mode Every time you unlock or play a mini game you get points to use towards buying car parts to build a car to race against other characters or your friends in this mode. Party Mode <b r>Party Mode is very similar to Story Mode but is much more suited to multiplayers and the rules are slightly different. Party mode includes three extra characters, Toad, Mini Bowser and Boo. The idea of this game is to end with the most coins and stars and not to knock out your oponents as in Story Mode. If you choose the bonus option in Party Mode you may occasionally find coin blocks and at the end of the game there are three bonus stars. Extra Mode In extra mode you will find the following three games: Card Party This is the ultimate mini game. It is a card/board game which you can play either against the computer or as a multiplayer. The aim is to reveal the most star cards at the end of the game whilst overcoming a number of challenges along the way. Ice Hockey This is a fast game with the aim to score a goal in your opponents net. This isn't as easy as it sounds, you must work out a strategy and pass often or you will be easily defeated. Volleyball This is Volleyball with a twist mainly because there are different balls to choose from, including a bomb ball that explodes after a cerain number of passes. Mini Game Mode It does what is says on the tin. This is where you will find all the mini games that you have unlocked in Party Mode and Story Mode. Mini Game Tips Coin Cache - Try to stay in the bottom row and ony ascend when all of the coins have been used. If you fall off at a high speed wait fot the pace to change. Twist 'N' Out - Stay towards the side until only one other player is left or the tornado closes in too much and then join the fray but don't take too many to risks. Merry Poppins - Don't make the mistake of timing your button bashing. Every pop is random. Night Light Fright - Every chain chomp moves in a different way so you can't press A just because everyone else has.
          So why do I like this game? Well it's fun, especially when playing with friends and family, young and old. There is lots to do and it's easy to pick up and put down. There is enough to keep your brain ticking over without you needing a degree to work it out. If you are after a sophisticated "grown up" game you are probably best looking elsewhere but if you liked any of the other Mario Party games or any WarioWare Inc. games or purely for fun and entertainment then I would definately recommend this game.

            Mario does seem to love his parties. Actually he loves his golf, tennis and karting too, he?s a versatile plumber when he?s not saving the Princess from Bowser. As the title suggests this is the fifth instalment of the franchise which seems no signs of letting up with Nintendo and Hudson happily giving us a new title each year. It seems that none of the games seem to have reached the heights of Mario Party 2, many people?s favourite, and our offering last year seemed little more than a graphical update so when Mario Party 5 was announced so quickly afterwards it was going to have to be seen whether this was going to be another cash cow for Nintendo. The Party franchise does seem to have taken a bit of a bashing over recent years. It seems that people have wanted it to change dramatically to justify the number of instalments. While a fairly reasonable point, things do have to change especially the fifth into the series, it?s hard to do so when they got the formula pretty much right the first time round. While they haven?t expanded much on the principle the Mario Party games are fun. They are great for anyone to play, both for hardened gamers and people who haven?t picked up a joypad, they may not offer anything groundbreaking but they are great at what they do. Mario Party 5 continues the tradition of multiplayer fun but this time Hudson have included a one player story mode for people who want a bash of it on their own. In the story mode you choose a character to help save the land of dreams against Bowser who hopes to take over each of the different worlds and fill them with nightmares of his own. Of course Bowser doesn?t like to do his dirty work himself and so you will be pitted against three of his little helpers who will battle against you on the boards try and stop you progressing from each world and ultimately facing Bowser in a showdown. It is a given that the one player version of the game isn?t going to be as fun and as entertaining as th
            e multiplayer, nothing can beat playing with your mates and it isn?t. However kudos has to go to Hudson and Nintendo for at least attempting to appease the lone gamer. The single player boards are made smaller and the Bowser comrades all take their goes at the same time which saves a lot of waiting around and makes the games shorter than they normally are. In multiplayer mode, which can be played with three other characters (including CPU players) the aim of the game is to rack up points and chase the elusive stars that scatter themselves on the board. You each take your turn rolling (or in this case punching the dice) to travel round the board and trigger any hotspots and then you will be thrown into a mini-game which is what everyone pretty much plays Mario Party for. One point to note, though, that if you are playing the multiplayer mode with more than one CPU controlled character they will each take their go separately which can really slow things down especially when they have a tendency to have a go at anything that comes across their way on the board. The mini-games are certainly the highlight of the Mario Party games and this one is no different. Mini-games are structured either where you are all against each other, two-against-two or three ganging up on one. This, of course, can result in some unlikely partnerships with the possibility of the first and last placed player on one team you are going to be enemies one minute and allies the next. Of course you can also find yourself in the amusing situation of three players against the first placed one. There are over 70 ?all new? minig-ames that you can encounter in the game and, while some are better than others, they are very fun to play. Most are of tactics to win and then there are, of course, the button-mashing ones the Party series has become famous for. None of the mini-games really repeat past Mario Party ones, even after five games they seem to have enough diversity, and in this game
            you?ll be chased by a giant whirlwind, control a UFO and perform the long jump as well as many, many other activities. One great addition to the game is that you can play matches that comprise solely of mini-games without the need to travel on the board. This is something that fans have been wanting for a very long time. There are a number of different ways to play via Mini-Game mode such as a tournament and decathlon but all amount to pretty much the same. The option to avoid playing the game proper and avoiding the board can mean that if you want a quick blast on the game you can do so which is handy as past Mario Party games could take an hour or more to complete. Presentation of the game is of the usual standards set by Nintendo. Graphics are not flashy and there are no big effects but they are solid enough, vibrant and colourful. There is enough variation in the looks of the games and to a lesser extent the boards to keep you pleased though some games to tend to use the same backgrounds. Character models look as nice as ever though some of their animations can look a bit rough round the edges at times. Sound is pretty much the same order of the day. Tunes are fairly catchy, though none match Nintendo?s usual first party efforts, but they fit the style of the game well. It would be nice to see Hudson a bit more adventurous still in the way the series looks and sounds but for now it still looks good enough to stand out from the crowd. Another aspect that has been given a slight overhaul are the boards. This time they are not only a lot more detailed and lively but there seems to be a good balance between adding extra features and not wasting too much time or adding more complications. The inclusion of the small paths in Mario Party 4 was really more of a hindrance than help and more often than not you couldn?t access them. This time there are no such obstacles though interaction in certain events on boards is still there. The item a
            cquisition has also had a brush up. No time is wasted choosing in a shop, capsules now do it all. Pass a machine and you have the opportunity to get one without shelling out any coins. You use them by either choosing a blank space on the board and using it to use the item on if it?s a hotspot such as loosing/gaining more coins or by using them straight off if it is something like calling Chain Chomp to take away some coins. You will need to pay for this bit though which seems a fair trade off. This does seem a better way to do things, its easier than debating what to get and also a bit more fair seeing as the item you get is random it doesn?t let people who have a load of coins to spare buy the more powerful objects. While a great addition to the series the game isn?t without shortcomings. Enemy AI is still dubious. While they perform well in mini games both as team members and team opponents on the board it is a different matter. If they can use an offensive item then it?s a 90% chance they will use it on a human player, even if you are not in first place, this ganging up can be tiresome and very unfair and certain points even in the realms of Mario Party. Speaking of luck some of the mini-games are comprised solely of it. There is sometimes no way and no skill at all in winning and is based on a total random choice from the CPU. This can throw the game off course, which is what Mario Party can easily do, but it can do it in other ways instead of messing with the games themselves. Other than those problems there doesn?t seem too many problems and Mario Party 5 continues the fun traditions of the first with ease. After a lacksture performance last year it seems Mario has brought a better Party to the series with this instalment. It will still have its critics but, Monkey Ball aside, there isn?t another game like this that offers as much immediate fun for all sorts of players on the current batch of consoles. It still isn?t a single player affair
            though the effort made is welcome and bodes well for future releases and with Mario Party 6 due out later this year we may not have to wait that long for Mario and his friends to get their party hats on again. In a genre now becoming crowded Mario Party still holds the crown for being pure and simple fun by a long shot.
