      Thumbs up

"Mickey's Speedway USA" is a video game released for the Gameboy Color console in 2001 by Nintendo. It features characters from the popular Walt Disney franchise. In the United States, the game received a rating of "E" by the ESRB panel which deemed it suitable for all ages.

The story begins with Mickey's dog "Pluto" being kidnapped and in order to recover him Mickey must complete a series of tournaments involving go-kart style racing. Each series is set in various locations in the United States which is split up into five distinct "Grand Prix" racing circuits. Before beginning the game the player is able to choose from more popular Disney characters including Mickey Mouse, Minne Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy. The characters each bear certain characteristics which allow for certain in-game distinctions, such as greater top speeds and greater acceleration rates. In appealing to a more child friendly market there is little difficulty in game. The challenge mostly spawns from avoiding enemy power-ups which can include oil slicks and turbo boosts, and these same power-ups are also available to the player for further balance. In all races there will be four characters to include the player him or herself and three computer opponents which can be preset at certain levels of difficulty from easy to hard.

Besides actual play, the cartridge contains interesting features which make use of an optional Gameboy Printer. As the player progresses he or she will receive a series of trophies stored in the "trophy room" function of the game. These trophies also gain access to certain photographs and picture postcards, and it is these items which can be printed through use of the Gameboy Printer.

The graphics are presented from an isometric view and contain pseudo 3D elements. This allows for clear differentiation in the characters and the various race environments which all come across as stellar in quality. The audio is also of a comparably good quality with each race track featuring a different musical score and various collisions and kart engine sounds being composed and placed well in the title. Some sounds do become slightly repetitive but are otherwise of good quality and pleasant to listen to.

Mickey's Speedway USA is a game I would recommend to prospective buyers. The simplicity in kart racing always makes for an entertaining game but the interesting features which this cartridge can enable also further boosts my opinion of the title.
