"Monster House" is a video game released for the Gameboy Advance console in 2006 by THQ. It is an adventure game based on the computer animated film of the same name. In the United States, the game received a rating of "E" by the ESRB panel which deemed it suitable for all ages.
The gameplay of this title follows the story of three young friends, Chowder, DJ and Jenny, as they attempt to settle a haunted house and prevent it from eating all of the local children on Halloween night. The children become victims of the home's consumption and must find an escape. They come to the conclusion that extinguishing the boiler's ignition flame will do this but the children will be met with opposition throughout by the way of monsters which can be dealt with using their water pistols. The game also requires the player to gather keys to unlock restricted areas for further progression across the home's 10 floors. In appealing to a younger market, the game is low in difficulty but I found it to be an enjoyable experience nonetheless.
The graphics are presented from a top down perspective which focuses on the children. While basic in design, the characters appear standard to what is expected from this perspective. Inspiration appears to have been taken from the top down Legend of Zelda games. Each of the home's 10 floors has a different colour scheme which allows clear identification in relation to the player's position. The various accents, such as rugs and chairs, are also well drawn to suit the assortment of floors. The soundtrack is appropriate with spooky musical scores and a variety of creeks and squeaks to compliment the haunted atmosphere of the game.
Overall, Monster House is a game I enjoyed playing and I would recommend it to prospective buyers even without seeing the film prior. It employs time tested gameplay implements and is backed by solid visuals and audio.
An adventure game based on Columbia Pictures'' CG-rendered movie, Monster House is a thrill-ride tale about three kids who must do battle with a mysterious home that is determined to eat every trick or treater in sight on Halloween. The Monster House videogames allow players to experience key moments of the movie as all three playable characters from the film as they explore the house room by room, while also taking on unique adventures that were inspired by the film. This movie-inspired game has been announced to be in development for select console and handheld platforms. Although this platform is one of the likely destinations for this game, it has not yet been confirmed what systems the game will be released on.
