Advantages: quicker to load, easier handsets

Disadvantages: none

Todays's multimedia PC's with their fast Pentium 4 processors, 16 bit sound, and accelerated 3D graphics make it an excellant games platform, so you might think that the day of dedicated games consoles is past.

But sales of games consoles are booming.

they are often bought by households that already have a pc. So what is it that's so appealing about the consoles?

In the first place, consoles are a fraction -- and usually as low as 1/10th of the price of a PC. And installation really is plug and play.

you connect the console to you TV, p[ut the games cartridge in, and your ready. However, this alone does not explain why PC owners also but consoles; for that you have to take a look aat one.

While PC games can be very sophisiticated, for raw action, consoles are the state of the art.
Console CPU's may be slowere than the latest pentium, but the PC can't come close in terms of rendering and texture mapping, the process that create realistic looking 3D worlds as you run or race through them.

Console controllers are purpose built for gaming, unlike PC keyboardds, which means that players find it easier to settle back and become absorbed in the game.

With Nicam digital stereo in telly's the consoles boom and explode much more realistically through the home hi fi speakers. (as my poor ears can testify)

Many consoles allow you attach up to 4 handsets now, so you can play with your mates. And the fact the you can now rent the games from video shops help keep the costs down.

Consoles are generally meant for the younger audience than their PC counterparts so brighter graphics and cartoon style characters are the norm.

Children seem to prefer the consoles, but with the inclusion of computers now in schools, who knows what the future fate of the good ole console will be.

Some interesting ideas there, rozalynd :). Don't pay attention to crispy, he's just an old Windows zealot ;)

You are 100% wrong about the graphics and sound being better on consoles. The latest PC graphics cards such as the GeForce 3 will blow away any console (except the X-BOX as it's got one in it), and most decent PC sound cards these days will do Dolby Digital, which is far superior to a telly.
