Good building block for a great sequel

One of the very best games for the Dreamcast, along with its superb sequel, was Power Stone, a fully 3D beat em up with a host of crazy characters, great maps, and awesome weaponry. Something of an opposition to standard beat em ups, this one boasts more freedom, with vast maps, and the ability to roam in the environmen free of the normal constraints.

The players are able to choose from ten characters, and are then placed in a battle with other characters. From here, you can either perform normal fistfighting, or get a little bit more hardcore and pick up chairs, tables, sticks, and various other items lying around to batter your opponent to pieces. Also, there are a number of Power Stones that appear around the arena during the fight, and if you're able to collect three of them, you'll turn into a larger, stronger, and more agile version of yourself, where you'll be able to turn your enemies into mincemeat for a while, and there's not much that they can do about it, except for run.

Although the game also allows for two human players to fight, the game does pale a little when compared to its amazing sequel, which allows four players to fight at once, and thus is a lot more fun and chaotic. Thus, it's rare that I will play this in favour of its superior sequel, but it's still got the core gameplay there that the second game built on, and so it must be respected as a beat em up classic for the Dreamcast that's a little different to your regular fighting game, and very fun indeed. An impressively crafted, visually unique game that's great fun whether on your own or with a mate, although it's somewhat redundant after the sequel bettered it in practically every way.

Power Stone one of the dreamcast launch releases, Powerstone feels like it's a straight arcade convertion as their is little other to do than arcade, it's a fun game while it lasts but it doesn't last long, after you've used the flame thrower there's nothing else to do, it's even dull in two player mode. Power Stone is an mediocre game and i fell it doesn't deserve the recognition it gets, it's humungously over rated. If you have a dreamcast and you need a beat 'em up and you're strapped for cash go with the safe bet ...Soul Calibur. Because Powerstone is only skin deep, it angers me how the producers feel they only need one option, have you played royal rumble on the dreamcast? Same problem. Powerstone does have a wide range of charcter and intersting fun cartoon graphics, the ending sequences are also funny though no speech, just text. The interactive levels are a nice touch, for instance when you on a pirate ship while fighting you have to look out for cannonballd and when you're fighting in a boiler room (at least i think that's what it is) you have to look out for flames. On a whole though the arcade action of powerstone is fun while it lasts, and it does not last for long.

Power Stone! Power Stone is an ace fighting game, one of the best on any console, ever released. Its made by the creators of Resident Evil, so you had to expect something original, and you’ll be thoroughly impressed – Power Stone is a Capcom marvel. The game is different to other fighters, as you have to run around some very strange arenas, more like rooms – full of all sorts, and picking up objects in order to knock your opponent senseless is actually rather good! You can also collect the three power stones, which act as power ups! Once you have the 3 power stones, you’ll turn into a huge version of yourself, and become all-powerful – easily winning that round against the enemy! So as you can imagine, it’s completely mad, you’re trying to get the stones, and not lose them – keep the opposition away! The fighters are all mad looking – typical Japanese gaming, and all have different qualities: some can fly for a short while, some can jump high, and some are just very powerful! Choose wisely in the one player mode, it’s actually quite a good charrenge! (I mean challenge, but the Japanese in game voice says Charrenge :-) The levels are well designed, and there’s plenty to keep you occupied – if you can get the game for less than a tenner then do so! It’s an original classic, and very quirky fun and full of vibrant life. 5 Stars.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

Powerstone was a refreshing change in pace in the genre of fighting games. Finally something one a higher level gaming platform has come out perfectly. The fun is insane! The interactive levels make the game so much more that it seems to be. You can beat a number of combos directly into your opponent, throw objects, utilize various weapons, flip off of walls/ceilings, and turn into a super version of your character by collecting the three stones in the level. Combos depend on the character and button being pressed and so do the super charge-ups. Boxes, tables, and chairs are the most common objects, but some characters can rip giant poles or light posts out of the ground and swing them across the level. For every object you encounter you have the options to either pick up and throw the object or to more quickly slide it across the floor at your opponent. If you like you can jump up and grab onto the ceiling and swing your way across the room to fly down and attack. The weapons are sweet. They range from rockets to flame throwers to extending poles. My favorites are the chain gun and Molotov cocktail. Nothing is quite as satisfying as blasting a tricky opponent every now and again. The most fun part of the game is getting the stones and transforming. Everyones attacks are fun to watch and do. Some people even look like a certain dbz character if you are at all interested. Each characters has regular attacks when they are powered up which all rock and super attacks. The super attacks are ASTOUNDING. They look great and they are incredibly fun to execute. Powerstone is probably the most fun I have ever had with a fighting game. If you like being in interactive environments and full three dimensional battle, then this game is perfect for you.

          Disadvantages

I have to admit I perhaps haven't played Power Stone enough to really appreciate the game. As a single player game I found it incredibly difficult to get into. There's so much going on that it can be quite difficult to follow the battle. Graphically the game is god, with a clean anime style to the characters and locations. The gameplay is pure slap stick, think of a Jackie Chan fight to get some idea. Within the arena you can use any object you can pick up to attck the opponent, along with weapons that fall into the arena and of course you can always get the 3 power stones. It's this complexity that makes the game a tough one to play against the computer, which I have to admit has made a good job of beating me so far. The game comes into its own when played against friends. In this situation everyone's on an equal footing and you can just get down to a frantic struggle to collect those weapons and stones and beat your opponent. I'd recommend the game if you're looking for a fun change from your normal beat-em-up and especially if you can round a few friends together for some bouts. One thing to bear in mind is that Power Stone 2 is on the way and this looks even better so it might be worth waiting for that

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

Power stone is a great game but not as good as its sequel. The graphics and sound are great and the graphics look a bit childish but this really is a good game. It is a one-on-one beat-em up where you simply have to fight your way through eight opponents collecting power stones and then take on the boss. Power stone is extremely playable but the best thing about the game is thatit has got a huge lifespan. You have to beat nine characters to complete the game and youre gonna want to complete the game with all of the characters to get all the end movies. There is then extra things to find by completing the game several times such as new items, mini games for your vmu, new view and new charcacters making this a great lasting game. Not as good as its sequel but still a great title and cheaper.

As u see everyone hear likes this game! i have it, but i'd like to point out something. This game's graphics are quite impressive and color (to attract yuonger kids i guess). Sound is above great (not perfect....but it goes well with the game)The diffulculty is high on 1P which will have pretty much everyone "GODAMMIT WHY WON"T U DIE U LITTLE #%$&*%". The lastibility is is worth the buy i guess, but most people would rent this thing and say "ok im done". The game is fast furious fun. I mean i always dreamed of a game where u can refelct off walls to counterattack at lighting speed, or throw a large amout of junk at your friend (im sure everyone has had that dream by looking at fighting over the years). But, im not saying it's cheap, it has INCREDIBLE IDEAS, but it is a simple game of chasing flying gems across the screen to get a domaint standing in that one little battle. I like the gems (since they gave me an advantage in many a fight) but the "fight" becomes a "goose chase" after the gems are put into play. I love this game BUT if u look at the whole picture i think u would understand my piont of view. I think what im trying to say is that the gems could be "optional", or at least there sould be a various selection of modes or option that could change it and that way they could the gems in a fight as "defualt" and some players could shut it off for TRUE FAST FURIOUS COMIC FUNNY-LOOKING FIGHTING (along with the hot chicks like Rouge heh heh HEH!).

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

The first thing I noticed about this game was the developer- Capcom. So I thought I'd have a look at what they'd done before and one game came to mind.... Street Fighter, which was the greatest, beat 'em up of the age a few years ago. Since then the series has been going downhill with the release of a long string of sequels which include - Street Fighter 2, Street Fighter 2 Alpha, Street Fighter 3 and about 12 others (yawn). So the question was - could Capcom come up with a winner? Well the answer in my opinion was yes. Capcom have come up trumps with the first fully 3-D beat-em-up game ever only on the Dreamcast! As ever in Power Stone the object of the game is defeat the other guy, however the game offers a whole new way to do this via collecting three Power Stones and fully interactive scenery. The unlimited use of the scenery really is amazing as no doubt you will find out as tables & chairs whiz past you and you find boxes flying through the air toward your head with vicious intent. Fights take on a whole new aspect as you find yourself having to dodge the scenery as well as your opponent, while being able to do cool things like swing round lampposts and shoot the other characters with weapons like bazooka?s and flamethrowers. Now onto the coolest part of the game? the collecting of three power stones. When you manage to do this your chosen character morphs into a cool supercharged version of themselves with the ability to kick butt!!! Unlocked special moves include huge yellow balls of raw energy, barrages of rockets, turning into a big boulder and squashing the other guy (Gunrock- he always was a bit strange) and many other moves which all do some serious damage. Of course each move depends on your character and as you would expect there are plenty of them to choose from, although there are nowhere near as many as in some other beat ?em? ups like Soul Calibur where there are over 19 playable characters. There are the usual type
s- fast, agile people, slow, clumsy people with a lot of power and the usual all rounders. These characters all have good and bad points but my favorites are Wangtang & Ryoma and two that I just can?t stand are Galuda & Final Valgas as they are so slow and clumsy. However for all my ramblings on I do have a few criticisms of Power Stone. The first of these is that in my opinion the game is almost to easy to finish as the Al on the highest difficulty levels just doesn't live up to expectations. Another disadvantage is the lack of on-line capabilities (Four player would be amazing!) could you imagine inviting your mates over and whooping their asses completely. However these are both pretty minor faults as overall Power Stone is a fun engaging game which is a lot of fun. The great graphics and innovative game engine make for a game that will keep you playing for ages!

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

As one of the first games to be release don the Dreamcast, this game set new standards in terms of gameplay and 3d interactivity. A total blast to play, this game will keep you entertained for hours, and it is so original it is like nothing I have played in the past. The graphics are great, the sound is also very good, but the gameplay is fast paced and very entertaining making this a real gem of a Dreamcast game that I thoroughly enjoyed playing. There are a number of modes of play, and a range of characters to participate as, and while the control system does not become instantly playable, you will soon get to grips with it and realise that a lot of work has gone in to how this game plays and feels, and the control system is just right for the fast paced high octane game its was intended to be. In the game itself, just about anything you can see can be either used against your opponent, used to your advantage or destroyed – its that interactive and the gameplay is enhanced so much as a result. If you do not own this game, then it is probably available very cheap now, so it’s a steal and a must buy game, especially for beat-em-up fans.

power stone id the first free-romeing fighting game, and it is really cool too. You pick of of 8(i think its 8)characters and jump into a fully 3-D arena where you must beat up your oponent to win, alot like anyother fighting game, but this one has a difference, you can pick up objects and smack each other with then, and there is also some objects called the "power stones", if you collect all 3 you get transformed into a mad fighting machine with outrageous attacks which are very hard to avoid, while your power up you have a power bar which is slowly draining, when it drains the power stones come out of you and you normal again, so you go on a mad rush to collect them again before someone else does. this is great fun, but once you've completed it, it gets a bit boring. still, i think you should buy it.

What a unique fighting game this is. Taking place in 3D arenas, the aim is to use anything and everything to beat up your opponent, in a one on one beat-em-up more remeniscent of Final Fight than Tekken. This makes for a very fun, very instantly playable game. The range of weapons is great, the moves performable impressive but slightly limited, and the characters all usable, if a little low on numbers. The game won't last forever, but in the short term, beat-em=up fans would be missing out if they didn't give this charming, unique, and instantly playable fighter a bash.

Insane! This is such a brilliant game, and breathes new life into the somewhat stale beat-em up genre. Where as nearly all fighter now follow the Street Fighter / Tekken moulds to a greater or lesser extent, Powerstone throws the rules out of the window, but only after ripping them up, throwing a chair at them and shooting them with a flame-thrower! In Powerstone, you chose your character and then your arena, okay, nothing new there. But the arena isn’t some featureless ring, it’s full of boxes, trunks, chairs, tables and the like. Pick them up, and throw them at your opponent. Grab the roof support. Pick up a gun, or a metal bar, or a rocket launcher. But the tactical part comes in the form of the titular Powerstones. There are three of these to pick up. Get hold of them all (beat them out of your opponent if necessary!) and you turn into a temporary super-charged version of yourself, dealing out massive chunks of damage to your antagonist. Powerstone is sometimes a bit too frantic for it’s own good, Tekken / Soul Calibur anoraks will probably turn their noses up at it. But it is SO much fun, with the myriad of ways you can interact with the scenery, that surely everyone in the world will enjoy it, even my mum. And, excitingly, Powerstone 2 is on it’s way with the promise of even more insane 4 player rucks!

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

I don't own a Dreamcast but, when I played this game the other night I thought that it was brilliant. I have never seen a beat 'em up like this before. I have seen 3D arenas and stuff like: Virtua Fighter (Saturn), Ready 2 Rumble (Dreamcast) and Fighters Destiny (Nintendo 64). None of these compare to Power Stone because it is unique. Power Stone has 11 different characters that you can be, they all have seperate moves and different strengths and weaknesses. There is a 3D arena which has objects like: chairs, tables and barrels, which you can throw at the opponent. Also roofs that you can climb on to to get away from a certain attack. Each level is individual and has its own objects and things to hold onto or climb around on. There are also weapons. You pick them up through a treasure chest that opens up. You can get weapons like: a chain gun, a ray gun, a kendo stick (extends across the arena), shields and much more. This is why it is unique. There is also the major part of the game, Power Stones. These are little coloured diamond look-a-likes. You pick them up during a fight. If you collect all of them then you change into a more powerful being and are less likely to get hurt more likely to damage the other person and also you have stronger, more damaging attacks. If the other person has a power stone and you have the rest then you have to beat it out of him. The multi-player on this game is very good. It can get boring though if there is only two of you. If you have other friends round and you all have a tournement then you can play on it for hours. The single-player game is not very good. All you have to do is beat each opponent once and then you have completed the game. The opponents are hard though, but once you have seen how they play then it gets very easy to beat them. The only good thing about completing the game is that you get 3 extra characters and also a lot of weapons to use in the multi-player game. <
br>There are also 3 VMU games but I didn't have a go on them so if anyone knows what they are and if they are any good then please comment and tell me. I will try to find out what they are and write it in. I recommend this game to anyone who likes a good beat 'em up and has a lot of friends to share it with because otherwise it gets boring.
