Rollcage is an arcade-style racing game for Windows and PlayStation, developed by Attention to Detail, and published by Psygnosis. The Windows version was released in the UK on March 24, 1999. (Source - Wikipedia)
Roll Cage, where do I start.. I love this Arcade game and still find myself creeping back to my playstation to play on this fantastic game as other games do not provide me with the sheer thrill of battling it out on the Roll Cage tracks.
The game consists of 4 areas to play on which is basically termed different "worlds" which each have their own number of tracks.
You can select which driver you wish to be from 6 initial options and this choice is based upon which attributes you feel would be better suited to your style of racing, for example Speed, Grip etc
Once you have selected your track and driver you are ready to experience the rough and tumble rollercoaster that is ROLLCAGE!
You can pit your driving wits against the computer in a league and the goal is to make it to the finish line in 1st place over a variety of tracks to become an overall winner, which then allows you to unlock new features.
The joy of this game for me not only the rollcage cars which seemingly can't be broken and the variety tracks even though the graphics are now vastly outdated. But that there are a variety of weapons that can be obtained during game play and these are used by both yourself and your opponent to ensure that you make the coveted 1st place.
The game is fast paced, engaging and when two players are battling it out - I find the game becomes quite competitive.
’’Game your way to glory…’’ Everyone in their kid, usually had one thing in their games basket and that was a cool Video Game with computer taking over, its been a long story. Though still video game manufactures like Sony and Sega doing their bit by launching their advanced games like the Playstation and Dreamcast. But for an average Indian kid this sometimes becomes a bit expensive because they carry a price tag of more than Rs 13000(315$). The advance graphics, which the computer games provide, are amazing. But excessive playing of games on a computer is harmful. For that matter anything done in excess are always harmful. For me playing computer games are 1. Mental Relaxation 2. Excitement 3. Fun. I have always been a person who likes to try new things and games have always been favorite. There was a time when games like Doom, Duke Nukem, Starwars use to be on my games shelf. People always ask me how do you manage doing everything in your life, doing your work, playing games, writing reviews and going out. If you have proper time management you can do everything with out hurting your body. Now coming back to my topic, since last 6mths, Fifa 98, Fifa 2000 & Cricket 97 were hot favourites and I used to really enjoy playing these games. Recently, one of my friend who is a real game freak and has worlds most of the games. He tries to get a hand on most of the games. I had asked him some exciting car games, though NFS is not my favourite. He gave me a CD saying that ’’This is one of the most difficult and boring game but you can try a hand on it’’. After hearing my friends statement didn’t have any excitement but after my hard days work in the night at 10.00, I Installed this game called ’’ROLLCAGE’’. Overview…of this mean machine…. When I started installing, it looked to me a very old game becaus
e it didn’t have any use of mouse and the look of it didn’t give me any encouragement. But that’s it, here probably changed my most amazing gaming experience which I would cherish for a long, long time and would become my most prized possession… What is this all about …? By this time, I am sure you guys must be very excited what has this Rollcage to offer. Okay..Okay… Rollcage is a game about some mean looking cars which looks from the outer world (You can say like the mars machine). This car has got fat tyres and the most important part it can be driven either ways means, if your car flips upside down, you can still continue driving. What is so great about a car which filps upside down and not even looks like a Merc or a Ferrari ? This car is like a James Bond car, which has got lot of mean things like the firing Machines. Yes, you can fire missiles, bombs on your opponent’s car. This is where the excitement begins. Here you have got different tracks which are bouncy, shapeless, round and you have got some fierce opponent’s who wont allow you to go ahead. This game can be played multiplayer on a Lan with 4 players and 2 players on a single machine. The graphics of the game is excellent and it’s got some nice trance music in the background. You can play upto 50 laps and with different levels starting from easy, hard to expert. What are the different tracks …? The different tracks on this games where you can drive these mean machines are : 1. Harpoon 2. Sapphire 3. Outerworld What are the mean missile and powers…? These are your roads to the finish, these powers are to be collected and to be used on your opponents. The powers are: 1. Missile NUMBER 1 This is a missile which every player who is leading the race is feared off, because this missile attacks only the player who is leading. Here you don
217;t need to aim the car, just fire it if you are behind the track and want to hit the number 1 player hard. 2. Aim & Fire My personal favorite because you aim your opponent and then fire it bang and he is blasted. 3. Shield Shield plays a very important role because when a person fires a missile , if you have a shield nothing can happen to your car. 4. Boost Boost is a power which helps you in increasing your speed and vrrrrrrrrroooooom of you go with a fire. 5. Electricity Though most boring power sometimes does come handy because if you are using this power and be close to your opponent he losses the control of his car. 6. Slow This is a power very useful when you are way behind and want to come close to your opponent. This power reduces the speed of the opponents to zero and you have a chance of catching him up. The Boost, Slow combination is the most useful combination. Okay now …what about the different mean machines…? The different mean machines available on this game are : 1. Yuri This car is available only with the cheat code , the most powerful car with high acceleration, high top speed, high grip to the ground & high strength. If you can control high speed then most valuable car. But I felt that based on its high acceleration its grip on the ground was not enough and does tend to go out of control. 2. Leon This is my mean machine the most balance car of the lot. It has got balanced acceleration, top speed, grip and strength. 3. Lothar This car is a menace due to its high body strength, if it bangs you then you are bound to go out of control. It has got high Acceleration, average top speed, absolutely high strength but zero grip good for banging but never remains in control and does slips and gets out of control. 4. Ria Most soft car on the circuit with very high top speed but low strength, low grip. 5. Jet This is a car with very high grip
but very low speed and low body strength. 6. Lenny The most powerful car on the circuit with very high body strength but very low speed, acceleration & grip. Though every one has different choice, but the most popular choice among my friends are Leon because of its amazing balance. There are many more features like you can play head to head with your friend, full grid which includes computer, you and your friend. You can race against time with time-attack or play the three league races. WARNING There are some things, which this game can give you. 1. Eye problem because the car rolls a lot and for keeping control you need to concentrate. As these cars can be driven even upside down hence you sometimes looks at the monitor upside down because you car is rolling from the above walls. 2. Your fingers may hurt because of the control you need to keep on the keys 3. Your shoulder might pain. 4. Most important becomes really addictive. I thinks this was a fair enough description and my friends are screaming at me because they want to beat me in this game for which since last 2 weeks I have been winning and recently lost 2 games. I am also going to check out the latest ver..of rollcage 2... So roll on with this cage and get going…..
This is the first game that I know of that the racing cars are reversible, if your car flips then it reverses itself, being able to drive backwards and upside down without having to change perspective, this is great fun at first but can get slightly disorienting after a while, especially with the graphics which, while being great and very vivid, are perhaps a little too intense for a game of this speed. Although at first playing this is an enjoyable racing game after a while it begins to get tedious. There is a certain difficulty in working out which way your car is facing and it takes an annoying amount of time for the car to land if you accidentally drive up a wall. The in-car weapons are imaginative but rather limited in scope and several of the courses are rather confusing to navigate. There are a choice of courses, themed as is traditional, from a flaming inferno course to a course on a downtown street as well as one going past a navy submarine in the snow! It's a fun game but not really with enough scope to keep me going for long.
People like rollcage to wipeout, although in my eyes it is nothing like wipeout. Rollcage puts you in the driving seat of a vehicle that looks a lot like a tyco rebound remote control car. The idea is that you race against opponents in a car that is indestructable, trying to get your oppenents behind you, and thus crossing the finish line first. People have complained about the controls in rollcage, and I do admit that they are a little weak. But realistly, if you were driving at 200 mph and you flicked the steering wheel, the last thing that you'd want to happen is to veer straight off the road. In rollcage 2 the controls have been tweaked though. The game is FAST PACED and thats how it should be. I hate racing games where it seems to take forever to get to a corner. In rollcage you see a corner and then your there. One mistake and your flipping all over the place and you've lost the race. IMO rollcage is worth buying just for the soundtrack. It features some very good techno/dance/trance tracks from fat boy slim and other famous artsists. The game lacks in practise mode features. all the options you have when in practise mode is to select the car you want to use, you can't select the level. To practise the levels you have to play the arcade mode. Apart from the controls and practise mode, i'd give this game a thumbs up.
ROLLCAGE At the start you are driving in what looks like a super turbo charged roller skate. You're surrounded by other madmen also driving roller skates with all sorts of mad weapons. The engine dosen't purr nicely, it roars like a lion which has eaten nothing but celery for a month. Your heart pounds, 3....2......1........GO! You slamm down the pedal and you feel the G-force as you sink into your seat. Welcome to Rollcage..... There's a lot that we have seen before. Super-fast future racing cars. Check! Collectable weapons and power-ups. Check! Cars that drive up walls and continue on going no-matter what way they land. Oh no, that sounds very new and it is my friend. It's the special ingredient that makes this game so sweet and unique. Cars fly around the screen like small flies and you crash through walls at high speeds while debris and rockets go flying around... leaves you breathless! Put simply, Rollcage is a well polished speed-demon of a game which will leave you gob-smacked! You wait years for a game with a good soundtrack to come out and then they all come out at once slapping you in the face. Wipeout did it first, with the Chemical Brothers and Prodigy, and now with games as different as FIFA 99 using top class clubbing DJ's to pump up the gaming experience and Rollcage's selection of phat beats is as good as any, and it's always nice to hear Fatboy Slim again. The graphics are very well polished as you would expect from the people who brought you the mind-blowing speed-rush of Wipeout, it is very slick and full of amazing detail. The "cars" look increadably detailed but they move at such speeds you won't get a chance to be able to admire them. As the missiles start zooming around you'll feel like you're at fireworks night all over again as the screen fills up with millions of firey bits and pieces. Okay, so it's not the most detailed game on Earth. Go fast. Go faster! S
hoot and kill people, and that's near enough rounds it off. However there are lots of little things that make Rollcage a game worth returning to. A fantastic two-player mode that will keep it playing for longer. Like most games like this, there are sneaky little short-cuts for you to discover and as you go up a league you unlock new tracks and you get a bonus two-player deathmatch arena where you go all out on weapons and chase each other around until one of you die. The deathmatches aren't the best thing ever but it is an amusing bonus. At the end of the day Rollcage is a game that stays in your collection for "just one more go".
I rented Rollcage for five days because someone told me it was good. It is a wipeout style racing game in which you can collect weapons and other items, and destroy fellow racers. I thought Rollcage was alright but there weren't many tracks to choose from and the graphics weren't amazing. The handling is pretty hard, I found myself going up to the roof of a tunnel then facing backwards numerous time. This could be a bad point or it could be a good point; a challenge. One thing I really thought was good, though, was when you use a certain item and your opponent goes really slow and wobbles all over the track. the only reason I liked this was because I found it really funny. Overall I think Rollcage is an OK game but nothing special.
The sound track alone is worth the price of this game, especially seeing as Fat Boy Slim has laid a track down for it. Essentially a futuristic racer, you compete in leagues to see who can come out on top, but there are time trials too. Weapons and pickups galore litter the track, hidden sections can be uncovered for shortcuts, and the level of difficulty is just right. Turn the speakers up, put the pedal to the metal, and rave your way around the varied and beautifully designed courses.
This game is like no other in it's league. There are very few games out on the Playstation that are this fast. The game is based on eight players bombing it round loads of tracks, trying to get in 1st place. There are weapons, pickups, and everything else to stop your opponents from getting ahead of you. This game has a killer soundtrack and looks fantastic, with collapsing buildings, explosions, and zero gravity wall clinging thrills all tightly packed into a few minutes of racing. The game never gets boring - there are so many bonuses and extra tracks, it will keep you mused for hours. The two player feature makes it great for when your friends come round to play, so you can blast each other to pieces!
Time can only help round out a final analysis of a big-name game. In fact, time has had a significant effect on my review of Ridge Racer V, and after playing the wheels off this game,I see it a little differently. (Time also helps me not feel so bad for letting a big import review slip between the cracks.) Because this was one of the first titles for what is currently the most powerful console on the planet, it was easy to be excited by the fine graphics, tight control, presentation and overall showiness of this game. After playing it to death, the depth of secrets impresses me, but I still wish there were just a little more meat to the game. In the end, that's what dropped Ridge Racer V from a sure five star to only a four star.
Roll cage is an alternative to the likes of Wipe out. It’s unique gameplay attributes include the ability to drive on ceilings’ walls and other gravity defying surfaces. The game is extremely fast and it doesn’t slow down even if the screen is cloggered with a huge amount of cars at any particular time. Where I find this particular game falls down is in the design of the 20 or so tracks. The dual shock support is very good
Rollcage is an intense driving game, unlike any you've ever experienced before. It combines weapons (a la Twisted Metals), with intense racing (a la Gran Turismo) for a truly dizzying ride. Unlike the Twisted Metal series, your weapons do not kill other opponents, rather they are used to slow them down or speed you up. Although the graphics are sufficient, they do not come close to Gran Turismo or Driver. The graphics are similar to the Need For Speed series. One of the hardest things to get used to is the unique feature of racing upside down, or right side up. The cars in Rollcage have large tires, and therefore can be flipped over and still drive with control. This feature makes Rollcage one of the hardest driving games I've ever played. If you can manage to keep control of your car, you might not need the barf bag for the motion sickness. Rollcage has several different tracks to race on, all with different challenges to master. Racing against a friend (or enemy) seems to be the most fun. The 2 player mode gives you a little more time to think you are in control. There is a league mode for 1 player, and it gets tough. If Gran Turismo or Driver is out at your video game rental place, pick up Rollcage, and give it a spin
This is the most origanal racer in the world. missiles, high speeds, colasing buildings what else would you won't from a racer, oh year music but don't worry its not sort of that ether. This game is not one to miss out on with new tracks and extra carecters to get plus the game has 4 battle modes for you to play on against but like before you have to earn them. The CD for Rollcage when put in a CD-player plays all the tracks from the game. With all that in one game Rollcage is one mager gam so go out there and get it (you no you won't to.
This is an arcade racer in its purest form. You go faster than ever possible, your car can't be destoryed or dented, and you have weapons. Everything you could want... but hey wasn't this wipeout??? Well it was, but instead of a levitating pointy 'craft' you have a 4 wheeled, rollcage speed demon which can drive upside-down. The game is simple, with one objective - race and win. The contols are simple and easy to pick up, so anyone can try and race you at your house when your frineds are round and you have all had a couple of beers. Even the most experienced players can lose to a beginnier, that's the beauty of this game. Anything can happen when you are racing at 400km/h on the ceiling of a tunnel. This is where it differs from wipeout and steps into a league of its own. If you were happy with wipeout then you could just stick with that, but you WILL like this. Fast, sexy, and a few bonuses hidden around.
If you liked wipeout, the Rollcage-2 will be perfect for you. Starting with the Hi-res graphics and endless playing modes, this game will take ages to complete. Having played the original rollcage, this one is MUCH BETTER, with very challenging tracks and game play, without toooo many annoying crashes against the walls and doing endless 360's to get straight again..! The difficulty level is just right and the many weaponns will leave nothing left to desire about. Let me tell you this is not just a racer... its got so many other little options that make the game much bette than any other racer going. this and Crash Team reacing are probably the best games on the PS. Rollcagfe and Rollcage-2 have suffered a lot from poor publicity. Games mag don't hype it up as they don't get paid to, so try this and judge for your self.. if you like it, go get it because it is reallly worth the money..!
I have this game on the PC, it was only £4.99 from HMV!!! It's a brilliant game in most respects, but the annoying thing when you crash is that you end up going flying all over the place, and it's impossible (almost) to get yourself back on track and facing in the right direction. I'd like to play the sequel, Rollcage Stage 2 to see if this has been improved in any way.The graphics and sound are excellent, but be warned, you need a fairly good PC to run it on (mine runs smoothly, but a little slow, an my Cyrix M2-300MHz with 32MB TNT2 3D Card and 64MB RAM).
