I am one of the biggest NHL and Philadelphia Flyers fan you'll ever find. So I know hockey games. And I think NHL 2k is the best hockey game I ever played. But it lacks somethings that NHL 2k1 should have to make it the best game it could be. First in season mode, there should be injuries and suspensions. One thing that makes hockey hockey is fighting your way through injuries and suspensions. But it shouldn't be so out of control that you end up playing with a team of minor leaguers. Second It is way to easy to score. I had NHL 2k for a day and I was scoring 13 goals a game. You should make the goalies tougher. But not so hard that the leading goal scorer has 30 goals. Next the goalie can only make like 3 different save styles. The goalies should make plays from their knees. Their sides. And their back. Also like everytime you dump the puck the glass breaks. It breaks way to much. Glass breaking is rare so it should only break if Al MacInnis takes a 100 mph slap shot and misses the net causeing the fan in the front row to get a platter of rubber and glass. Or Peter Worrell rides his man so hard into the boards that the victum windes up in the 12th row. Next in the edit line option there sould be a feature that lets you choose the captain and assisstants for the game. And the letters should show up on the players jersey. Another thing that should show up on the players jersey is the player's number on their sleeve. Another option that should be added is a jersey number option where you can change the number of any player to another number. When I was playing a Flyers season, the Flyers made a trade that brought Rick Tocchet back to Philly. His number was 22 but that was occupied by Luke Richardson so he took number 92. But the game just left him 22 as well as Luke Richardson. There are also some options that will make the create a player option better. You should keep all the options in it now but add these. For Players you should be able to choose their
stick type, stick color, blade color, tape style, and tape color. For Goalies you should be able to choose their tape style, tape color, leg pad style, arm pads style, and helment style. Also the game doesn't need a coaching stratagies change in the game play mode you can do that in the pause menu. But you do need so other buttons. On offence X : quick shot/slap shot, A : pass, B : speed burst, Y : deek, and R : dump the puck. On defence X : poke check, A : change player, B : speed burst/body check, Y : block shot, and R : Last man back. L should be line change on both sides. But over all I think any hockey fan should play this game.
NHL 2K is a very impressive Dreamcast sports title produced by the legendary Sega Sports team (who are also responsible for the amazing NBA 2K, Virtua Tennis and NFL 2K1) and really is worth buying if you are an ice hockey fan. There's some similarities between this and NBA 2K namely the way the game plays: it's fast fluid and incredible fun with realistic graphics and very good player animations, but it isn't as smooth or as stylish as it's basketball counterpart. NHL 2K is an ice hockey fans dream game, and its currently the best game on any format in the fairly quiet genre of ice hockey games. There is ever statistic and player that you'd want, various game modes, and a very interesting punch up system which can happen at any time during the actual game! The way NHL 2K is presented is fairly good, but again it fails to match the excellence of the NBA 2K. The players are more 'blocky' and the commentary is on a much more 'basic' level with constant repetitions, and so the game isn't as good as it should be. But, as far as sports games go, NHL is impressive, very fast gameplay and very rewarding too. It's difficult, but you'll start to like playing it when you're good. Not an essential buy, but well worth renting, and NHL fans should love it.
If you are just looking for a good mutiplayer game than I would advise getting the NBa game instead of this. Just geberally it hs a far more finished feeling. Although this game is also good. And lets face it who doesn't enjoy getting into fights with there might on the hocky games. It is still brilliant this game the only thing is unless you are addicted to ice hockey or games there really isn't mush of a single player game here. This is designed for multiplayer and works better in multiplayer. So get your mates round and enjoy!
