Soldier of Fortune is one of the few FPS games available for the Dreamcast. When it was released, 2D shoot-em-ups and arcade conversions were the most popular fodder for Sega's console. As an example of one of the first FPSs on the console it shows its age, and has many flaws, but also has quite a bit of blasting fun lurking within its boundaries.
You play the part of a mercenary, and I'm sure there was a storyline of some description. Suffice to say it serves to take you from location to location, shooting any enemy trooper that happens to stray into your path.
On the bad side - the loading times for this game are legendary in the Dreamcast scene. Stories of being able to make a cup of tea while waiting for levels to load are not exaggerated! Patience is mandatory. The graphics of the game are disappointing too. Less than detailed and very basic. A lot less impressive than other examples of Dreamcast FPSs (Quake 3, Half Life etc) However, I took this to be the point at which 3D engines had evolved to when this game was released.
The good points are that the is mapped out well, with interesting level layouts. And you really can't beat this game for stress relief! The sounds that the guns let out resonate beautifully (even if they do sounds ever so slightly exaggerated), and when you shoot a terrorist in the leg, arm, head, the offending limb will get blown clean off in a shower of blood. This sounds rather bloodthirsty, but compared to today's standards (where people can be mutilated, shredded, impaled, with graphic realism) it is rather tame.
Really this game should get a review that is average at best. But it is a good game, let down by poor loading times and lacklustre visuals. And it will satisfy any angry office-worker's lust for vengeance
Ok, to start i must tell all PC owners of this game, who think it maybe differnet on the Dreamcast, its not. Its the same game, only worse. The game see's you playing a soilder of fortune, a mercenary, who name is John. John is a pretty clued up kind of chap and has no problems taking on drug crazed gangs, terrorists and the like. By the look of him he is getting on in years, but he can still jump and dodge like the best of them. The story takes you from one killing field to another, but it does involve alot of killing. Now, this game did cause quite a stir when it made its PC apperance. You have the ability to shot peoples arms, legs and head off or even if you are feeling in a bad mood every limb they have! I think is what appeals to alot of people, the ability to take your opponent down, by shoothing them in the leg or arm, but this does ware off by the end of the first scenario. The weapons are good and if you play FPS you will reconsise them, pistol, shotgun, machine gun, rocket launcher and sniper rifle. The last on the list is the best feature in my view, the sniper rifle is nice and easy to use and you don't lose any detail as you zoom in and out. Now, the reason for my hates on this game. THe first is the loading time. It is ridiculous, you can make a cup of tea in the time a level or cutscence loads. Now if the levels were huge, i wouldn't mind, but they are not and before you know it its time to put the kettle on again! My second hate is the engine. It may be me, but i noticed that the graphics went warped around the edge of the screen, it is hard to describe. I think the best way is imagine a sphere, the center of the screen stays ok, but the edges curve around. It is hard to explain, but its weird and after an hour or two i was getting a heaache. So, in conculsion, this is a bad port of what is/used to be a good game. The controls are okish, but my pet hate with the engine and the load times has givern me a bad impr
