Orginaly released on the Amiga, Speedball 2 arrived on the Gameboy back in the early nineties, I had played and loved the Amiga version to death, and was unsure how it would measure up on the gameboy - so i bought it. The idea behind Speedball2 (for our younger readers!) is to build a team that is capable of winning the Speedball league. You start off with a team, Brutal Deluxe, that has basicly got the leagues worst players in it. You can buy new players (they become available gradualy throughout the game) and improve you current players by spending tokens you collect during the game. The game itself is best described as Football (same pitch layout, score in the same way) and rugby (violent, and you use your hands rather than kicking the ball) it`s played with an up/down view (as were most sport sims in those days - Sensible, Kick Off etc which probably explains my inability to play current football games. Hmph)the idea being to score the most points. Points are awarded by throwing the ball into the oppoments goal, injuring an oppoment and lighting these icons on the wall until you got a complete set of five lite up. The team with most points obviously wins, and so moves up the table. Great Fun. The more wins you get, the more tokens you collect the better chance you have of being able to compete (I can be hard when the oppoments are faster and stronger at first) but once you`ve played a few games it gets easier - which to be honest is it`s only downfall, good players will find it too easy. It is a very entertaining game though, and one i would recommend you look out for (it must be available on the cheap by now).
