Advantages: Lots to keep you hooked, Can buy add ons
Disadvantages: No one will get a word out of you whilst playing with it
I had seen this game on the shelves at my local pc store many times and not been very interested in it at all. It seemed a bit like a tedious game where you would build buildings and get people to do all the boring things that you have to do yourself in your daily life.
That was until a friend lent me a copy. She had just bought the expansion pack and said I could borrow her game for a while. Well I wasn't that interested even after she assured me I would be hooked. It sat on the shelf for about a week until one evening. The kids were in bed and there was as usual nothing on television. I decided to give it a go.
Then at 3.30am I decided I had to drag myself away from the screen and go to bed. Yes it had me hooked straight away. It is a very clever idea and keeps you attached to your pc for hours.
The first thing you have to do once you have installed the game is to choose a family. You can choose one of the ready made families on the disc or create your own. Each family is allowed so much money to start with and even though there is a huge mansion house with a Pool you can't buy that until they have worked and earnt enough money to buy it. They are given $20,000 and to buy the mansion it is about $50,000.
Once you have your family you then have to choose somewhere for them to live. You can choose one of the houses already there or buy a plot of land and build your own. Don't become to ambitious to start with though as you will find you have no money left and no food for your family. You then have to find the adults work. If you have bought them a pc you can look there or just get the paper that is delivered every morning. Children have to be ready for school when the bus arrives to take them and also adults have to be ready when their car picks them up for work. Bills have to be paid. Adults have to learn many skills including cooking or they will burn the kitchen down and as I found with my first f
amily kill the parents. NOT a nice thing to happen.
They have to be kept happy, fed, given somewhere to sleep, make friends and socialise. They also need to play. Doing all of these things for The sims is what keeps you hooked. I found myself saying I will just get them all dinner and then switch off and then I would find that they needed the loo or a shower or bed. Before you know it it is the early hours of the morning.
There are many more things you can do with this game and you can also buy many expansion packs to add on and do extra things. Such as a HOT DATE pack or HOLIDAY pack. It can be bought in many pc shops and I have also seen it on amazon for £34.99. Some of the expansion packs can be bought there too either at full price or a discounted price for used copies. I don't know what the quality of these is like though.
The Navigation around the town is easy enough although it isn't a huge place. Moving the sims around their homes is fairly easy once you have learnt to click on them first before telling them where to go. The Graphics are fairly average but it is not the sort of game that requires fantastic graphics. I think the only thing that annoyed me about this game is the sound. The music can become a bit irritating and the voices of the sims too. You have to look at little picture bubbles coming from their mouths to determine if they are happy or not as the sound that comes from them sounds foreign or their own language. However, on saying that if they were talking they probably would have limited vocabulary and that would become quite annoying too.
I have to say that for someone who was not attracted to this game when seen on the shop shelf would say after playing it that it is a very good addictive game. It certainly didn't leave me bored. I have had to return the copy I borrowed now and will have to buy a copy of my own as I need something to keep me amused when the evenings are too
quiet! I know I should get out more I can hear you all shout but with three kids in the house and only a small supply of babysitters and money it is the perfect way for me to relax.
If you haven't tried this game you must!
