The Weakest Link (PS)
Advantages: Fantastic atmosphere and sound effects and awesome opening.
Disadvantages: Poor graphics and outdated mechanics
The Weakest Link is worldwide franchise that was a gameshow by the BBC. Following it's success at the time a game was made for the PS1, which is what I am reviewing today. The game makes me feel very nostalgic because I loved playing on my PS1 and loved watching The Weakest Link. Anne Robinson had a wonderful stage presence and the game mechanics at the time were suspenseful but also could be amusing at times. The last episode of The Weakest link aired in March 2012, but as they say all good things must come to an end.
The introduction over-hyped me for the game. The video introduction included Anne Robinson herself in a dark room with a huge screen and podium which seems to be set up in a stadium. It felt very cinematic and epic. Unfortunately, the game is anything but. There are some video clips with Anne in it to make the game more faithful to the TV show but the graphics are choppy in the gameplay so in conclusion, this makes the graphics very inconsistent.
There are four main modes in the game: Single is the one player mode, Multiplayer is self-explanitory, Championship is the harder version of the game and Bend The Rules allows you to customize the game to suit your needs. You can make it easier or harder if you want. You have 24 characters to choose from, and you will be playing against six other players. Looking back on this game, I think this game would have been more better if we were allowed to design our own character.
Not that is matters, the characters are a bit boring and generic and have annoying accents when some of them are either too bubbly, posh or annoying. On the other hand, William seems to be a normal chap. Other than that the sound is spot on. You get to hear the narrator more often and I love Anne's personal insults for each character.
Once all the bad bits are out of the way, I think this this is a really fun quiz show. I really did enjoy this game when I was younger and as an adult I can see that the game had a lot of improvements to do, but as it's only a ps1 game and things have changed since them I'm going to let it all slide.
I think you can get this game pretty cheaply nowadays. I don't think it's really worth that much money now though. Gameplay is decent, the questions are quite easy which I think makes it suitable for people of all ages. If you had a PS1, I would recommend it, but I don't think it's really that worth it now because it's so outdated.
Summary: Great Nostalgic Game
