Tomb Raider 2 (PS)
Advantages: Quite easy to play, good story, lots of levels
Tomb Raider 2 came out in 1997. We had a demo of the first level free in a magazine and as we already had Tomb Raider, the first in the series of games we tried it out. The level was a lot more involved than the first game and some of the bits like getting through the traps nearer the end of the level seemed really hard but as soon as the game came out we bought it.
We played it on the Playstation, I am not sure whether it came out for any other platforms back in those days.
The story of the game is about the adventurer Lara Croft. She is trying to find the artefact called the Dagger of Xi'an and goes to many places round the world in her quest. She is not the only one looking for it though, there is a gang called the Black Flame led by Marco Bartoli who want it as badly as her as it is thought that who ever owns it would have the power of the dragon.
Lara has some new weapons in this game than she had in the last one and the graphics are noticeably better. She is also able to climb up ladders and walls in this game.
You can access a training level in the game before you start so you can learn all the moves in case you have never played it before or just want to pay around in Lara's house. This time you can explore out in her garden as well as inside her home.
The first level in the actual game is the Great Wall. Lara goes to china and has to tangle with beats such as spiders, tigers and even a tyrannosaurus rex. As I said above, it is quite hard to get through the traps later in the level although you can now save the game at any point without having to find a special save point.
The second level takes Lara to Venice where she encounters more human enemies than beasts. The level is quite interesting where she has to make her way round the waterways to the end of the level where there are some gates with bombs in front. She is supposed to open the gates and then find a way of detonating the bombs by driving another boat through the bombs and then to get through the doors which are on a timer. We found after playing the game a couple of times that we could get round this by opening the doors and then swimming round the canals and through the gates carefully dodging the bombs on the way.
Level 3 is Bartoli's Hideout. This is a big house still in Venice where Lara comes across more thugs after her. The level is quite easy to do apart from trying to kill all the bad men, some of them are quite hard to shoot and it is hard to get out of their way.
Level 4 is the Opera House. It is another interesting level where you have work your way through the theatre killing the bad guys . At the end of this level she boards a sea plane where Bartoli and his men are and they find her and knock her unconscious.
Level 5. When she come round she is locked in a room on board an offshore rig. The level is a good one as she has no weapons as they have been confiscated so you have to find her some again. She has to find her way through the rig killing all the baddies who are getting in her way. There are security cards to find to get through doors which add to the game play on this level.
The next level is still on the rig but this time Lara is in the diving area. Again you have to find pass cards to get through doors and the baddies are worse than before as some of them have flame throwers and you need to get out of the way of them or she will burn.
Level 7 is quite a hard level to do as it starts off underwater and Lara only has a certain amount of breath she can hold before she drowns so you have to steer her past a shark and into an old ship wreck, then open doors inside and make your way up through the boat until she can get a breath of air. Their are places where she can grab a breath but it is still hard to do it what with the shark coming after her.
Level 8 is when you are inside the Wreck of the Maria Dora. Lara is in the space where the swimming pool was but as its upside down she is in effect on the ceiling. She has to find her way through the rooms minding she doesn't step on any broken glass and killing more of the bad guys along the way. She ends up in a room which had a big glass roof but its now upside down on the floor and filled with water. There is a hole in the glass and she has to swim down under the water and make her way through to a cavern killing the barracudas and eels that come out to get her.
She is now inside the living quarters of the shipwreck. There are more baddies to get rid of to get through the areas. She ends up in the theatre and has to find a way out.
Level 10 finds Lara out side on the deck of the ship. You have to guide Lara through the areas finding switches and keys to open doors and killing the baddies along the way. There is quite a lot of area where you can explore in this level so it is quite a good one to do. After you get to the end of this level Lara steals the sea pane and escapes to Tibet for the next levels.
Level 11 is in the Tibetan Foothills. It is all snowy in this level and you have to help Lara get through the ice and snow up a steep cliff to where there is a hit with a snowmobile she can use. This is quite fun riding around on this and you can run over the baddies instead of having to shoot them. There are some places where you have to get off on foot to explore but a lot of the level is done on the vehicle. There is a hard bit where you have to make your way round jumping the snowmobile across from rock to rock without tipping it off the side or you have to start again.
Level 12 is the Barkhang Monastery where there are monks walking around. You have to make sure you don't harm the monks and they will help you kill the baddies but if you kill one of the monks then they will all attack you and make the level harder.
Level 13 is called the Catacombs of the Talion and the kids love it when this level is playing as there are Yetis to kill and they love them for some weird reason. Might be the strange noises they make or something but especially my niece is in stitches when we play this level although she is a bit scared of them as well especially as some of the level is done in the dark where you can only ear them and cant see them.
Level 14 is called the Ice Palace and is a good level to do. There are more yetis to kill and some snow leopards dotted around. There are springboards in the floor areas where you stand on them and they propel you up in the air to try to reach other areas.
Level 15 find Lara inside the Temple of Xi'an This level is more like the other Tomb raider game with lots of traps and things to find your way through. There is a big cave later in the level with enormous spiders in it so if you are arachnophobic then you might not like this level. At the end of the level Lara nearly gets to the artefact which is in fact a dagger but Bartoli beats her to it and stabs himself with it to get the power of the dragon.
The next level is really strange and I cant explain how they come about this but it is a good level to do. It is called floating islands and there are all these green rock like things that are floating in space and she has to jump from one area to the next area and work her way through the levels. It is weird and there are strange noises as background music. If she falls off one of the sides she dies so you have to be careful and make sure she reaches all her destinations. There are some nasty baddies on this level that come after you once you wake them up and they are hard to kill so you have to jump about a lot to avoid them but make sure you don't jump off the edge.
Level 16 is the Dragon's Lair and Lara has to fight against the dragon that Bartoli has become. She cant kill him with the guns but she can stun him and then once he is down she has to remove the dagger from his heart to kill it. It is really hard as the dragon is always breathing out flames to set Lara on fire and if she burns she has to jump through small holes in the floor to douse the flames then climb out again without it getting her again.
After this fight Lara finds herself back in her home and at first you think this is it and she has completed the game but then you hear guns firing and you realise it is not the end and they baddies have come to her house to see if they can get the dagger back. Lara has to kill them all which is not that easy as she has a limited amount of ammo and once it has gone that is all there is. But if you can complete the level then you have finished the game.
I still play this game now and then, may be a few times a year just for the joy of playing it. Plus the old Tomb Raider games are much easier to do for me as there is always a set way of doing jumps and things unlike the newer games. Once you have finished the game you have the option of saving it and then you can replay any of the levels and you would have maximum ammo and all the weapons. This makes it even more fun as there are things you can do that you would have found hard in the game first time round but it is still good every now and then to restart the game from scratch and start again.
I give this game 4 stars even though up to todays technology it is dated but it is still a good game if you like the Lara Croft games and it is easy for kids to learn how to use the controls.
