Ultra Pro Dual Life Counter:
Collectable Card Games, (CCGs), such as Magic the Gathering, Yu Gi Oh and Pokemon are BIG business and with people having to stay in more it seems they are being revived somewhat. Following on from my recent reviews of CCG accessories I have decided to review one of the coolest accessories I have for Magic the Gathering, (MTG).
(If you want to find out more about MTG or CCGs then check out Wikipedia or www.wizards.com).
In Magic the Gathering you have life; you start off with 20 but various things can give you more, (there is no upper limit but we seldom get more than 35-40), and it is even easier to loose it! The first one to reach 0 life looses. Now this is all well and good but there has to be a way to keep track of it and there are several ways to do this but some are definitely better than others. Some gamers use glass pebbles, (the kind everyone had in vases in the 90s), but they take up a lot of table room and counting them becomes boring; a lot of people use 20 sided dice, (or a combination of dice for numbers above 20), but the writing is small and so it's hard to see how much life your opponent is on; there are various other ways but you get that it's trickier than it seems to find a good way to keep mark of your life.
The Ultra Pro Dual Life Counter is ingenious but incredibly simple. You get a sturdy plastic card, (a bit bigger than credit card), that has two holes cut in the front and two wheels on the back that you can turn from the top of the card. The wheels have numbers on them, (from 1 - 50), and so by turning the wheels you can display your life total through the little windows on the front. (I hope that makes sense). You also get a collapsible stand, (made of cardboard, but very sturdy), that holds the counter upright for easy use and viewing.
The counters are decorated to match the deck boxes and deck vaults that are produced by Ultra Pro and they feature designs by prominent fantasy artists such as Easley, Brom and Caldwell. The designs for me are very appealing as I love fantasy art but wouldn't want it splashed all over my walls because it's often dark and very masculine. I really enjoy functional items that are also beautiful and I enjoy the beauty of a well designed yet simple piece of equipment that actually works.
For me these are a great addition to any gamer's collection and they satisfy my love of fantasy art, simple design and my love for gadgets too without being at all expensive, (around £3.00 from eBay including postage). The fact that they display up to up to 50 life is great because it should cover it for all but the most epic of games. Highly recommended.
