Advantages: Will Appear To A Huge Audience
Disadvantages: Something For Classical Fans...?
Thinking as I think best, in the hours of darkness that proceed my descend into sleep, my thoughts turned to this competition. With them, came a vision.
The laws of time and the facts of history and present - all this falls away for my tale. It is the greatest concert of all time, starring the ultimate band ever created...
…Lights flicker, then blossom - piercing the darkness of the concert hall. The blazing spot-lights all direct our eyes to the same place. Centre stage. In the foreground, fireworks set the scene for the night ahead - explosive, captivating, beautiful to behold. In only a few minutes, the arena will erupt, the gentle chants of the crowds will dissolve into incoherent screams of excitement, as from back-stage the band arrives...
Fans of all music genres have been brought together for one special night in history. The squabbles that have always arisen from conflicting tastes will melt away, and the resentment between fans will seem no longer important. For one night, if only for one night, music shall be just that - music. Not a image supplement, nor a money-making device, just music. Styles will emerge and constraints will disappear. For one night, the world of rock, pop, heavy metal, opera, and dance will become as one.
...Tension mounts, as the moment before the start of the set becomes only seconds away. Then, it starts.
Darkness falls for a split second, then beams down on the front of the stage. Standing with his head bowed, is Freddy Mercury...
<FREDDY MERCURY - Front man of Queen, one of the greatest selling artist of our time. World famous top class entertainer, possessor of an incredible voice and stage presence>
...The crowd roar on que, as Freddy releases the first note of the night. "Tonight, I'm gonna have myself a real good time!" - he sings. To his right, another spotlight appears. Gently strumming his guitar, is Kurt Cobain...
r>
<KURT COBAIN - Appointed 'leader' of modern rock/pop music. His skills as a singer and song-writer are recognised worldwide>
..."I feel alive" - he sings in time with Freddy, exchanging a wink across the stage. The rockers in the crowd explode - two of their greatest heroes combined as one. While they raise their hands in celebration, the time for the other fans is just round the corner. After a few bars from Freddy and Kurt, the song tops as from the back of the stage an almightily bellow drones them out. Still in the shadows, the unknown voice continuous singing passionately in French. Stepping into the light, comes Pavarotti...
<PAVOROTTI - the worlds most famous tenor, and representative of the opera genre. Possessor of an incredible voice, and an almighty presence on stage>
...Kurt and Freddy simply look back, as the great man soothes the crowd, who sway respectfully in an eerie, silent wonder. Ten seconds later, Pavarotti begins a simple but powerful hum, as from the left, a single beat is heard. To this beat, is added a melody, and to that a bass line. The dance-fans in the crowd in the arena rejoice - it's The Chemical Brothers, joining Fatboy Slim behind the decks...
<THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS/ FATBOY SLIM - Both of these acts have achieved massive mainstream success with their behind the decks action>
...Then, Kurt and Freddy begin singing once more. Amazingly, the singers combine the lyrics from Walk This Way, with the beats emitted from the DJ set, along with the gentle, rumble from Pavarotti. The sound is incredible, and all areas of the crowd are sweep away. On the right, mid song, appears a drummer, a bassist, and a lead guitarist playing the same tune with their own metallic quality. The players? David Silveria, John Densmore & Jimi Hendrix...
<DAVID SILVERIA - Drummer for the 'KoRn' - the most successful commercial nu-metal band of all t
ime. The bizarre KoRn style involves low-tempo drumming and a frantic head-banging style - often both in the same song. Appealing to the metal fans in the crowd>
<JOHN DENSMORE - Bassist for 'The Doors'. Bass lines in Doors tracks were often complex and always important>
<JIMI HENDRIX - Considered by most as the greatest guitarist of all time. Hendrix's skills on the guitar are legendary>
...Now, everyone in the entire crown is buzzing. Never before have such great stars been brought together in such a unique way. With Freddy and Kurt leading the way, the huge group of musicians play some of the greatest songs of our time. 'Imagine' by John Lennon, 'We Will Rock You' by Queen, 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' by Nirvana, 'Riders On The Storm' by The Doors, 'Sultans Of Swing' by Dire Straights, to name a few. The music combines the energetic thunder of the dance gods, and the time-less power of the rock and roll legends.
The night draws to an end. Walking out the arena, fans of different music stride side by side, all united by the power of what they have witnessed.
All that holds music back disappears for one eternal night - the constraining 'rules' breed in society. This band of super-powers proves one thing - music really can bring the people together…
My band idea? Freddy Mercury, Kurt Cobain and Pavarotti, backed by music from Fatboy Slim and The Chemical Brothers, plus David Silveria, John Densmore & Jimi Hendrix. The sound would be unique, and the image so many of us dwell on will be simple - nothing matters except the music. My band would appeal to a huge range of fans, and the crowd would not be limited to one particular audience. Because the talents at the band's disposal are so diverse, any song is possible to cover, and the writing forces of Cobain and Mercury would produce some amazing songs on it's own.
If you don't like the stars I picked, then substitute them for someone else - the idea is still fundamentally the same. A band with representatives of so many different genres will help people become more open minded about music and different tastes, as well as creating it's own style that would be undeniably unique.
