22/7/00 - The Final (Lords)

Well we did it. England has triumphed in the end. Not through luck or a poor performance from the opposition but through good, solid play. There were many smiles at Lords today, all of them well deserved. British sport should take note, especially the spectators. Cricket still allows alcohol and this is a good thing. The sell out crowd obviously enjoyed the day. A few got drunk but drunk cricket fans do not cause much bother. They restrict their antics to mexican waves and the occasional naked streak. Since I am writing this 2 days before the final, I won’t really predict the teams who are going to contest Satuday’s match. However, the results of the games to date have been interesting. The tournament has shown the extent of the demise of the West Indies demise. It has also highlighted the considerable problems that the West Indies will face when Ambrose and Walsh finally retire. Dillion, McClean, Rose and King have looked mediocre and unable to penetrate even Zimbabwe’s weak batting line-up.
