I worked at Glastonbury this year for an employment agency and I have to say that there were quite a few more cheap and tacky sports wear types hanging around looking for mischief and the tecno dance tents since I last worked there in 97. I remember it as a sea of students jumping around to the manic depressing Indie thing that gladly is disappearing now, something very disturbing about young middle class kids with there whole lives ahead of them trying to be miserable when clearly they have everything going for them. Alternative is what Glastonbury used to be. An alternative way of being; an alternative to the hassles of real life; alternative entertainment and alternative type of people. Now it's just about over-run with violent lager louts, tent thieves and muggers who managed to ruin it for everyone I know who went this year. I never went to Glasters especially for the music, the excellent Cabaret tent and the antics of the circus, Green and theatre fields were what kept me busy. And even in recent years it was possible to retreat to these havens and avoid the crowds in what we dubbed Bedlam - the areas around the main stage. Glastonbury Festival, the Original and Best. I'm sure you've heard plenty of times before, "you don't have to see any bands to have a good time." This statement is perhaps slightly less true at a muddy year, but when the weather is good, it certainly is. Despite the influx of popular bands, and therefore a more diverse mix of people than the original hippies, there is plenty of fun to be had avoiding the main stages. The stone circle is a wonderful experience night or day, but best at sunrise when the drumming builds with the daylight, and cheers sound around the field.
