Advantages: none that i can remember
Disadvantages: see the opinion
I have spent many christmases alone over the years and I think it is unfair of the media to'rub it in'.
Whenever You watch television or listen to the radio at christmas time You are constantly reminded that it is a time for family to gather together and share.
Now when i was younger i lived over a hundred miles from my family, i had a squalid little bedsit which in the winter would have ice forming on the inside of the window. All the people in the other desits there went to visit their families which meant i was totally alone.
Alone and on the dole so no turkey and stuffing just canned spaghetti on toast.
No christmas spirits, wine, beer just water from the tap.
No presents to open, no-one to talk to .
At the time i had a son who was only a couple of years old. I was not allowed to see him and I knew that he would be spending a 'family' christmas with his mother,half-brother and a guy he knew as 'dad' and he would be completely oblivious of who I was let alone where or how i was.
i turned on the radio to cheer myself up.
Happy shining people telling the whole world that they should be with family and loved ones. Telling of their own families and the wonder of it all.
I used the the television from the guy next door's room
Bombarded by images that made me realise what i did not have. Reminding me what the people I loved dearly were doing without me.
Eventually I decided to go out for a walk and again saw families and lovers walking with smiles on their faces relishing their wonderful christmas.
I want into the local park and whilst there i found a guy who was obviously homeless sitting, staring, and my heart related to him.
I invited the guy to my bedsit for some spaghetti on toast and he showed me he had a bottle of chep vodka in his jacket.
together we made the best we could out of what little we had, but....
the tv and radio was left turned OFF.
So at christmas time, spare a thought for those who simply dont have the things you may have and don't need it crammed down their throats from all angles.
