France has become a reference point to follow in football and the national team a benchmark to be overcome. The Euro 2000 Champions are a radical mixture of experience and youth, which gives on average, players in a perfect equilibrium. Zidane, at 27 years old, sits neatly between Blanc (34) and Henry (22). Three generations of player that play in the neighbours to French football (England and Italy), maintaining and conserving technical skills over 'force' football. France owes them a great deal (maybe more to Zidane): a World Cup and a European Championship - in other words the title of the world´s best team.

But, having said all that, France must rebuild its defence for age is not forgiven by anyone.

The European Championship have marked the international farewell for Deschamps (31 years old), who has announced his retirement from the national team, and to Blanc, who would reach the next World Cup at the ripe old age of 36.

Desailly (31 years old), Lizarazu (30), Petit (29), Djorkaeff (34) will reach the World cup in Japan-Korea a bit over-aged as well. For most of them, the medal hanging from their necks is joined with the recognition of their contribution to their sport. This does not happen every day: that the World and European Champion footballing generation has to hang their boots up because of their age. Despite the fact that they could last a couple more years, it is a shame. Football is cruel and is all about ruthless finishes.
