I managed to lose my programme so cannot name names but Carmen was wonderful...a fantastic voice, very sensual and sexy, a bare foot free spirit...the scene where she sings while laying on the table in a bar and then gets up and dances on the table was especially provocative. The Matedor was tall and dressed for the most part in brown leather trouser and a long leather coat...not at all what I expected...this performer certainly put a stop to thinking only large framed men could sing that powerful role, he was so thin he looked llike a bull would have trouble finding him in the bull ring! Opera...what does that make you think of? Posh people and warbling diva's? I had never been to see an opera, until last night, when I saw the Welsh National Opera perform Carmen at the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton. I chose this opera as I knew a lot of the music...mainly from the musical Carmen Jones, which was a modern day English speaking movie version. I was disappointed when the curtain rose, I was expecting lush sets and glorious costumes, but as the story involves girls working in a cigarette factory, the military and a band of renegade gypsies, I think I was being naive to expect sumptiousness!
