Advantages: Children being children
Disadvantages: none
Take some time to read this delightful true story. I have been working at a Primary school in Bradford as a supply teacher for quite a while. The school was burned down just before the start of term in August but everyone rallied round and, with the support of Bradford Met. and the fabulous staff there, we opened for business in September using two annexes. It has been hard work but with a tireless headteacher who spurred everyone on and gave encouragement all the time miracles happened. I look after one reception class and in the classroom opposite me teaches Mrs. Dianna Norman. She has a year one class. Now I know Mrs. Norman, she runs a folk club in Dewsbury called the Shoddy Doggy and as you can guess she is very fond of music. She spent time in the days leading up to Christmas teaching the year one children the words to a carrol, Robin in the Holly tree. The kids took to it and loved it too. Now up to Christmas you can imagine how difficult it has been. Teaching in temporary accommodation, limited resources and all other manner of things. Staff kept a happy outlook and the kids did their best. Well, one particular day, cold, windy and damp, the children were lining up in the playground in their class lines ready to come back in to the school. There they were, lines as for each class when Mrs. Norman's class lead the way in. I do not know who started it even though I was in front of the lines, but one of the children in Mrs. Norman's class just burst out singing the carrol Robin in a Holly tree. Spontaneously all the other children in that class joined in and, instead of going straight into school they weaved their way in and amongst the other lines singing their little hearts out. All the other class lines were simply spellbound and this display lasted about three minutes before the children walked up the steps and vanished into their classroom, untill the
ir voices slowly faded and echoed away. To me, that was Christmas. Children being happy and doing what they felt, straight from the heart. Fabulous, I wish, I wish you could have been there
