Advantages: Only for big business

Disadvantages: Forgetting the real reason

I once heard someone say, "dont bring religion into Christmas", quite what he was thinking beggars belief. I am not overly christian, but I do believe in a God and in Jesus. The real reason for Christmas is to celebrate his birth.

Yes I do partake in the fetivities and enjoy the many parties, but on the 25th my family and I gather and exchange simple gifts. We also read the bible stories covering the birth of christ. We try our best to keep the expensive things away from it all.

Over the past month or so the TV, papers and mags have all been plying their trade to try and get us to buy all sorts. It is the time of year that the "specials" come out, and invariably get sold out leaving parents to franctically dish out vast amounts of cash to get the goods.

I do blame the big business, but we must also blame ourselves. If we just said no and remembered what it is all about commecialism would have to take a back seat. We can spoil our kids and family at any time but we only get to celebrate Christs' birth once a year. Lets try to keep it sacred.

Another great op. The problem of commercialisation might be slightly reduced by having a 75% rate of tax on any income over , say, £100,00 a year. The proceeds from this tax could go to charities, such as Save the Children, Salvation Army etc. This tax might help to drive out of this country all the crooked business chiefs, drugs barons, millionaire cabinet ministers.... House prices in london would come down....When Christmas comes I simply cannot afford to spend lots of money (apart from buying the occasional goat). Last Christmas some not very clever businessmen spent millions and millions on unecessarily lavish parties....

I enjoy Christmas (or I have in the past). But the real reason os deeper than you talk of. The reason for the celebration is that the early christians could not stop the pagan celebrations of the winter solstice, with the return of the sun for another year of planting crops. Therefore Christs birth celebration was moved.
But in this modern day of multiculture should it not be a time to just rejoice in all humanity regardless of religion.
I for one give and receive Christmas cards from my Muslim friends. They do not celebrate christmas as such even though Jesus is one of their prophets.
