Real christmas? (Christmas and Commercialisation)

Christmas has certainly become very commercialised - no sooner are the mid-summer months drawing to a close and the christmas cards and advent calendars hit the shops in September. All you see are adverts for toys on the television and it actually makes you wonder if everyone knows what the purpose of christmas actually is.
I mean do children nowadays realise that it is supposed to be a celebration of the birth of Jesus and not just the birth of another Pokemon character? I'm not greatly religious but i do have some beliefs and it seems to me that the true essence of christmas has fallen along the wayside somewhere down the line.
