Advantages: Lovely time of year for families
Disadvantages: Expensive!
How many shopping days to go? I can't remember, but it's not that long now, and as usual I can't wait. I think I'm more excited than my two children! They're 4.5 and 2.5, so it's a lovely age as they're aware of Father Christmas and know they have to be good! Last year we left a glass of sherry out for Father Christmas and a carrot for Rudolph, and my little boy was so excited on Christmas morning when he discovered that the goodies had gone. The look on my son's face last year when he came downstairs and saw that Father Christmas had brought him a bike was something I will treasure forever. He kept saying "I've got my bike!" over and over. It really made my Christmas. It's said that Christmas is too commercialised these days, but I think it's a s commercialised as you want it to be. You don't HAVE to buy flashing Santas to decorate the outside of your house, or tacky "novelty" gifts that appear without fail every year. I must admit that in all the excitement I don't always think about the true meaning of Christmas, the birth of a baby; but carol services never fail to move me and if you're a parent who's attended your child's nativity play, I'm sure you've had a lump in your throat! The sight of the little ones dressed in sheets, tea towels and tinsel - aah! Now on to the Christmas food. I've only cooked a few Christmas dinners, but I've found it's better to buy a frozen turkey instead of a fresh one. Not only is it quite a bit cheaper, it saves you having to collect a fresh one on Christmas eve when you've got loads of other things to do. I also make sure I cook the turkey on Christmas eve, so leaving the oven free on Christmas day for other things (eg. tons of roast potatoes!) It's much easier to carve the meat when it's cold, and it can quickly be warmed in the oven before serving. Another thing
I do is buy next year's cards, wrapping paper and decorations in the sales (usually half price) a couple of days before Christmas. If you wait until a few days afterwards, there's not usually much of a choice. What more can I say, except Happy Christmas to Dooyooers everywhere!

- 17/11/00 I can't wait. I share your enthusiasm for Christmas. It will be my sons first proper christmas and I can't wait to see his face when he sees the tree and decorations.
Merry Christmas |
