I'll just lay out my stall here, so you can put all that follows into context. I am a Christian, so I may have a slightly different view to some on this forum.

Christmas was introduced during the Roman times, to replace a large pagan festival which was celebrated on (or about) the 25th of December.

How far we've come from celebrating Christmas as Christs birth can be seen from the Christmas cards we buy (snow men, holly, presents, trees, cute animals, sometimes the wise men, and rarely Jesus). We now even use X-Mas rather than Christmas.

Even Marks & Spenser have joined in with an advert that asks us to think of three words that make us think of Christmas. We have "Peace on Earth", "Filling a stocking", "Morcombe and Wise" with the obvious punch line that the answer is "Marks and Spenser". Well, not for me.

I have a lot of sympathy for people who eshcew Christmas. It can be the most depressing, lonely time of year. Charities like shelter and the Samaritans have the most work to do during the festive season.

So we celebrate the birth of Christ, who said that if you have two coats then you should give one to someone who doesn't, who told us that the whole of his message could be summarised as "Love God", and "Treat others as you would have them treat you." (Not, you notice, "Don't do to others what you don't want them to do to you". The command here is much more active.)

Jesus is not just for Christmas!

God bless...

Your op was indeed short - but I get your drift. My family aren't religious but we always sang carols etc, and enjoyed all aspects of christmas. I believe that 'each to their own' - I do spend a lot of money at christmas, but I love doing that for the people I care about. Christmas is a family time, and even those who don't necessarily beleive in mangers and donkeys can still enter into the whole spirit of caring and giving. Christmas cards for instance, are a great way of renewing aquaintance, and keeping in touch.

I enjoy my annual blowout - the shopping, the parties, the food etc, and I am not an immoral person! We should all just do it in our own way. Cheers, merry christmas, Karen.

I liked your opinion, even though it was short and sweet.
Im afraid christmas has just been taken over by the commercialisation of it all, and the celebration of christ is out the window for many an household.

Yes, although Christmas has lost its meaning somewhat, there is still value in the 'new' version, despite the rampant commercialism asscoiated with it.
