Advantages: Saves money, easy to make
Disadvantages: May go mad with the measures!
I want a cocktail that’s simple and doesn’t contain unheard of ingredients that you buy and then throw away two months later because they either haven’t been used or have crystalized. We all want to try something different at Christmas don’t we? We don’t mind having the ‘hangover from hell’ as we (well, most of us fortunate ones) have a long enough break to make a full recovery! Ok, we all do the same, we go abroad, try a really lovely cocktail, get smashed on it and think “Ooh! I’m going to make that when I get back home and impress all of my friends!” But why is it never the same? (Unless you have had a few before you try it and then anything tastes good!) They always contain that one certain thing that you aren’t sure of, you either don’t like the sound of it, or you just can’t seem to be able to buy it. So, I thought that I’d have a search for basic cocktail recipes that don’t contain weird or hard to get ingredients and well, here goes……. GIN BASED COCKTAILS HORSE’S NECK 3 ice cubes 1½ measures of gin dry ginger ale PARADISE 2-2 cubes cracked ice 1 measure gin ½ measure apricot brandy ½ measure unsweetened orange juice dash of lemon juice WOODSTOCK 2 – 3 ice cubes, crushed 1 measure gin 1 measure dry vermouth ¼ measure Cointreau 1 measure unsweetened orange juice piece of orange peel 1 slice orange ORANGE BLOSSOM 1 measure gin 1 measure bianco vermouth 1 measure unsweetened orange juice BRONX 1 measure gin 1 measure sweet vermouth 1 measure dry vermouth 2 measures fresh orange juice **************************************** VODKA BASED COCKTAILS LE MANS 2 – 3 ice cubes 1 measure Cointreau ½ measure vodka soda water 1 s
lice lemon SALTY DOG 2 – 3 ice cubes 1 measure vodka unsweetened grapefruit juice pinch of salt VODKATINI 3 ice cubes, crushed 2 measures vodka ½ measure dry vermouth AUTUMN 4 ice cubes, cracked 1¼ measures vodka ¾ measure Southern Comfort 2 teaspoons lemon juice SCREWDRIVER 2 – 3 ice cubes 1 measure vodka juice of one orange *************************************** RUM BASED COCKTAILS CUBRE LIBRE 2 – 3 ice cubes 1½ measures dark rum juice of ½ lime (or 1 tablespoon unsweetened lime juice) coca-cola ZOMBIE 3 ice cubes, cracked 1 measure dark rum 1 measure white rum ½ measure apricot brandy 2 measures unsweetened pineapple juice 1 tablespoon unsweetened lime juice 2 teaspoons powdered sugar PINA COLADA cracked ice 1 measure white rum 2 measures cream of coconut milk 2 measures fresh pineapple juice PINK TREASURE 2 ice cubes, cracked 1 measure white rum 1 measure cherry brandy bitter lemon or soda water (optional) *************************************** BRANDY BASED COCKTAILS BETWEEN THE SHEETS 2 – 3 ice cubes, cracked ½ measure brandy ½ measure white rum 1 tablespoon unsweetened orange juice SIDECAR 2 – 3 ice cubes 1 measure brandy ½ measure Cointreau ½ measure lemon juice ALEXANDER 2 – 3 ice cubes, cracked 1 measure brandy 1 measure Tia Maria 1 measure cream CREOLE PUNCH 5 ice cubes, crushed 1½ measures port ½ measure brandy 2 teaspoons lemon juice NB: To prepare ‘cracked ‘ ice, just put the ice into a strong plastic bag and bash with a rolling pin. Quickest way to ‘crush’ ice is to pop in the blender. If you haven’t got a drinks measure,
just use an egg cup! It doesn’t really matter what you use as long as you use the same utensil to measure each alcoholic unit. ****************************************** There are obviously loads more, but I only wanted the basic simple and quick ones, because let’s face it, the quicker the’re made, the quicker the’re drunk!
