Decorating the house for Christmas is one of my favourite parts of the season (along with making a big Christmas cake) and I always enjoy digging out the decorations and remebering past Christmases. Usually my family only buys one or two decorations each Christmas, and we have baubles going back from before I was born, they are looking a bit worse for wear now but still look merry on the tree. Of course all these bits and pieces which have been bought and gathered over the years mean having a "colour scheme" is pretty much impossible. I fact I am frantically trying to get many decorations constructed at school at the moment. In my house there is an annual argument over whether the tree should have tinsel on it. To answer this question I think we need to look at the reason why we have Christmas decorations. Whatever the original rationale, Christmas decorations now seem to serve the purpose of making Christmas and bit different and cheering up the place during our dark and dull winters. The spirit of Christmas has changed to be about (hopefully) being thankful for what we have and taking the time to appreciate each other, give gifts and joy and generally have some fun.
