Advantages: gets people who don't know each other talking right away

We were bored of the same old holiday dinners (any holiday, not just Christmas), and so a few years ago we tried one of those 'murder mystery party' box sets. They are brilliant, provided you have very outgoing, loud, fun friends. Everybody comes in costume in the theme of the mystery and everyone remains in character for the entire mystery, which usually lasts from two to four hours depending on how many drink breaks you take! They are great fun and well worth the 20 or so pounds they cost.
