Advantages: Not As Easy As Asprin And Bed
Disadvantages: Works, If You Have The Strength Of Mind
Of course, the first thing that springs to mind in this opinion is the obvious smug approach - want to cure a hangover? Then don't drink in the first place. How funny. Not too funny when you awake from a night of consumption, your brain taking running leaps against the sides of your skull, and your stomach throwing burning lava up your throat though. Alcohol is a funny old girl. We flock to her for comfort because we haven't the confidence to survive in crucial social situations, taking refuge in her ability to remove our inhibitions, but all she really does is sent us a bit crazy. I suspect everyone has looked back through hazy-eyes at 'the night before', and felt more then just physically sick as they remember their actions. I have, that's for sure. Sometimes we bear a black-eye and a bruised fist, sometimes we awake to find unexpected guests by our side, sometimes we awake behind bars - it all causes the same reaction. 'That's the last time I go near another drop of alcohol!' And we mean it too. Until the following weekend. So, realistically, we're not about to keep our word and stop drinking. So that leaves the problem of the hangover. Firstly, what you can do when still drunk, or while your getting drunk. MIX 'N' MATCH Two huge causes of the hand-over are mixing drinks and drugs, and drinks and drinks. If your going to smoke a joint of cannabis before you go out, mixing it with ten pints isn't going to help matters. Needless to say, if you feel so inclined as to take Ecstasy or something even harder, mixing it with alcohol will probably kill you (avoiding the hang-over, but somehow missing the point). As for 'drinks and drinks', by that I mean mixing your alcohol types. Try and stick on only lager for a night, or only spirits - mixing the two and trying fancy cocktails may be fun at the time, but will leave you well and truly broken in the morning.
r> H(ELPS)20 If your not too drunk, I honestly believe the best thing you can do is to drink water. It sounds so simple, and it is, but the chances of your throwing up are much less for some reason. Before you collapse into bed, pour your self a glass of the clear stuff and make sure you drink it all. The science behind it? I just know that it works, and that's good enough for me. A glass or two of water will help no end, if you still have the co-ordination to turn the tap and find a glass that is. PMA Another tip, if you are sober enough, is to lean out your window for five minutes before you turn in. Take deep breathes, and force yourself to think sensible thoughts. I think of this as a kind of 'mind-cleansing' process, and if do this as well as drink the water, your chances of a bad head in the morning are reduced in my experience. Of course, the most obvious time to combat a hang-over, if when you actually get one. Even taking all the above precautions isn't going to ensure your hang-over free in the morning. GET STRAIGHT UP I'm a huge believer in mind over body. If you lay in bed thinking about how bad your hang-over us - you will have a bad hang-over, simple. The trick is to force yourself to get up and dressed as soon as you can, even if it kills you. Do not spend the day in bed - you have to provide some kind of a distraction for your mind to concentrate on, leaving precious moments when you can forget how bad you feel. EAT A HEARTY MEAL Now I know sometimes even the sight of food will cause you to throw up instantly, but if you can, stomaching a bit of breakfast helps a lot. Some people can do this, some people can not - it usally depends on the severity of the hangover it's self. Once again, it's keeping your body to routine - not allowing it to step back and dwell on the pains, and also it's renewing your bodies energy resources which will help
the fight to recover. GOOD OLD WATER (AGAIN) If you can't eat, you really should drink some water. Sometimes, even a shot of neat coke-a-cola can be helpful, but all in all water is the best cure. It can calm your throat, and again reduce your chances of being sick. Some people say egg-white milkshakes, some people say a good days sleep - I say no to both. Getting up and getting on with your day is the hardest (initial), but the most effective way to recover from your hang-over. Leap triumphantly from your bed, open the curtains and do your best to carry on business as usual. Oh, and don't drink as much next time. Here's to alcohol and regrets! It is Christmas, after all... Cheers!

- 25/11/00 Great op! I agree, you either give in to it or fight it. My next door neighbours work hard, so play hard....(alcohol)..and refuse to have paracetamol in the house. They must both go to the gym as soon as they get up and must carry out the normal daily routine...they really are incredible..late 40's too!!...(they still cant get over the looking shit though!) |
