Advantages: It's still mostly untouched and very rugged - how we should expect it to be

Disadvantages: The shops although helpful do spoil (to an extent) the area

My partner (Sue) had never been to Cornwall, so last October I thought I'd go one better - I took her to the furthest westerly point in mainland britain - Lands End. The map calls the area Sedden, but I don't think it matters what it is. It's the edge of country and that's all that really matters.

The most famous point is the wooden mile post showing the vast distance to New York, but there's a very old fashioned farm with pens on the inner edge of the cliff face, and a foot path that allows you to walk right to the edge - although we walked to the top of the path we didn't go to the very edge, but did walk along some very steep, rugged footpaths. The area is very rugged and unspoilt by progress - as it should be and has an air of excitement.

There's a cafe, doctor who exhibition and a Lands End clothing shop, and a trawler on the cliff and a small playground for the kids within 100 yards. When we visited the shops were closed, but the exhibitions they have can be seen as a while saving about a third. I'm not giving away the price, as when we went it was October like I said, so with the new year there's probably a new price - you can find it quite easily on the internet.

Lands End is place you must visit, and it in some ways makes you aware of the way we have developed over the centuries. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

With the cold Atlantic wind, which is never too far away, it certainly makes you feel you're in the wilderness.

Summary: Visit the end of the earth (or UK at least) and feel the unspoilt appeal of this location
