Newest Review: ... from New York' and 'The Thing') show him at his absolute peak, mixing brilliant effects with dazzling technique and a wry wit. They're very downbeat films, but that only underlines Carpenter's refusal to play along with Hollywood's set rules. But some of his most famous movies are just terrible - 'Halloween' may be a very stylish film, but it shares exactly the same faults as all of the other slasher movies - a prurient approach to murder, with whore victims killed with their breasts in shot, and 'nice' virgins proving untouchable. Just because it's well shot and edited doesn't make... more

Some of John Carpenter's movies are fabulous: 'Assault on Precinct 13' is a classic, brilliantly directed, without an ounce of padding or sentimentality (the shooting of the little girl is one of the most shocking sequences in any movie, anywhere). 'Dark Star' is equally fabulous, an anti-sci-fi movie which deliberately turns decades of awe and wonder about outerspace on their head to depict space travel as infinitely dull and unrewarding. Mulder and Scully to be honest I cant see what the fuss is about. Basically the storylines got silly so I stopped watching. The alien storylines were fine at first with some very interesting twists in the plot Gillian Anderson and Dave Duk. Took the lead roles and it looks at the moment that David is going to be replaced lets hope so. I hope they get some better storylines that will get me interested again. If you like this sort of programme then don’t miss the x-files otherwise stay clear and watch PSI-Factor its much better. ...  Read the complete review
