What a good return for the millions ITV paid to lure him away. The fact that he rarely appeared on our TV screens presenting football meant that when he returned for Euro 2000 we realised how we had all moved on without him. Instead of commentating Des has tried to become a celebrity, but in fact seems to be even more boring than ever. ... more

When Des left the BBC there was a lot of fuss about how much money ITV were paying and how would the BBC cope without him. The fact that he rarely appeared on our TV screens presenting football meant that when he returned for Euro 2000 we realised how we had all moved on without him. Premium Review BBC v. ITV (105 words)

What has happened to Auntie's football coverage? The corporation used to be peerless in its presentation, but ITV has recently blindsided it. Not content with poaching Des, ITV now regularly fields three former England managers on its panel. While Mark Lawrenson whines into his moustache on 1, we are treated to the wonderful Bobby Robson speaking a language of his very own and trying to remember the name of "the big lad at the back, plays for Spurs". Mottie and Alan Hansen are fighting a rearguard action for the BBC, but for the first time in my life I think ITV edge it. ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Lynam, Des: He will be back! (208 words)

Now that the BBC have lost Match of the Day to ITV I feel that Des Lynam will be back with a point to prove. Sure Gary Lineker had held the spot quite well but I missed Des Lynam on one of the Greatest shows on TV. ITV are investing very cleverly in football as I know that almost everyone I know loves the 'game' And Des is going to be on tip-top form for the arrival of premiership football. I thought Des Lynam and Terry Venables done well to make a joke out of the opening ceremony as I also thought it was 'big pants' And laughed at their cheeky jibes toward the giant man who walked like one of the cast from the thunderbirds. Des Lynam is using ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Quatro Fromagi! (99 words)

There is and only ever will be "One Des Lynam!" ITV splashed the cash to capture the King of Sporting Cool, but in my opinion they've over-done it. This is captured in the ITV ad's "I'm close to getting excited." King Des doesn't need scripted coolness, he oozes it from every pore, but the combination of ITV's commercial slant and Des's fame going before him, I think he tries too hard. If ITV release Des from the commercial restraints upon him then they'll get their full moneys worth. ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Lynam, Des: Sold Out (122 words)

Des used to epitomise smooth. Now he's gone commercial, and has definitely lost something. He's a lot more wooden on ITV. On the BBC when he was promoting upcoming matches it had a "Come round, we'll watch it together, have a laugh and a chat" sort of vibe, on ITV it's more "Please watch, here are some ads, we need more viewers, we're the best". And as for those Miracle Grow ads!!! Des needs to come back to the BBC for his sake, yet they've got Gary Lineker now and wouldn't want him back. I hope he's happy with his cash. And he's looking old, isn't he? ...  Read the complete review
