Advantages: Best match of the tournament

Disadvantages: There had to be a loser!

What a game!

In my humble opinon, this one was the game of the tournament. It was a case of the power and agression of Venus Williams against the (for want of a better word) more 'traditional' game of Martina Hingis.

With Hingis resplendent from the back of the court, consistently catching Williams out with beautifully struck top-spin lobs and Williams a giant at the net, persistently sticking to her plan to come in, and burying some gorgeous volleys.

Williams stole the first set, as both players traded booming shots. Williams reminded me of the multi-championship winning Pete Sampras, with the mighty serve, but cleverly mixing in baseball style 'sliders' to force Hingis out of court. Venus got the vital break and took the first set.

Hingis raced back into the game in the second set, remaining composed under pressure, to serve out to level it at 1 set all.

And the third set....... blimey! No less than EIGHT consecutive breaks of serve! Both players were chock full of desire to win, and it showed. Most games went to at least 40-30, if not deuce as these two stars battled for the decisive set. Break of serve followed break of serve, as both fought valiantly to consolidate a break and steal a charge.

Finally one of them held serve, and Venus served out for the game, visibly taking extra time to gather her thoughts (and her breath!) and winning the match with a blasted ace. Her joy at winning was obvious and Hingis too was smiling knowing she too had played a great game, but had just lost out. In interviews afterwards, both sportingly complimented one anothers games, always a nice touch. And so it's the Williams sisters in the semi's. Venus vs. Serena. Neither of them will disgrace the final and both, on current form deserve to be there. The seedings suggest Venus should win, the form book and those in the know, tip Serena. I'm not bothered, if the final is half as good as this game I'
ll be happy!
