Advantages: We enjoy each others company, We remember Christs birth

Disadvantages: It all seems to much work beforehand

I must admit it I love Christmas I wouldn't change a bit of it. I have always loved Christmas and nothing has managed to spoil it for me. I know I complain about all the hard work involved but it is well worth it.

This is how a typical Christmas day goes in our house.

Far too late the night before an exhausted mum and dad go to bed for as long a sleep as the children allow. They have been warned not to disturb us before 7 am.

Any time from 5am on the children wake up and open their stockings. In the stockings they find the traditional pants, socks, toothbrush, sweets and a box of cereal. There are usually a few small trinkets as well. One year they all got a tiny Christmas tree to decorate with the decorations. It kept them quiet for a few more moments. Now the trees are already decorated in their rooms. When one child is awake they are soon all awake and trying not to wake mum and dad, not too successfully.

At about 7am they come into mum and dads room showing off their stocking booty, well what they have left of it! They then help mum and dad open their own stocking. Once everyone is awake it is time for breakfast so everyone goes down for the only family breakfast of the year. We try to have some special breakfast food to keep us going. At this stage we can open a present.

With a bit of playing time soon passes and it is time for a walk to church. The service is at 10.30 and is an excellent opportunity to calm down over excited children. They are always keen to show off a present in the service. We get a chance to greet our friends and wish them all a merry Christmas. To me this is the most important time of the day as I am celebrating the birth of Jesus who came to this world to save us from the consequences of our sins. I have once had a Christmas with out church and I missed it terribly.

After church we have the walk home. When we get home their are children impatient for another pr
esent so that is what they get a present then mum and dad do the work which still has to be done for lunch. Most of the work is done the night before. One child prepares sprouts, pigs in blankets by another child and jelly by another. Christmas Eve has been very busy for everyone!

When the food is ready we sit down for a meal and manage our turkey with all the trimmings. Crackers are a must with the silly hats, jokes, and pieces of plastic rubbish. We manage to eat our main course and stop for the queen’s speech. By the end of that food none of us feel like eating pudding so it usually waits for Boxing Day! Maybe this year we will eat some pudding on Christmas day. I love the traditional pudding made by my mum, the mince pies, jelly and ice cream. I have never liked brandy butter. To drink we will have a nice bottle of wine and the children will have a fizzy drink.

The afternoon is filled with present opening, game playing, and television watching. It is usually a fun time but some one usually falls asleep for some of the time. Having not eaten the Christmas pudding everyone will nibble through the afternoon, sweets and nuts are a favourite. Quite late in the day people want a meal again so out comes the cheese and biscuits. We like to have a large cheese board with lots of different cheeses that will be enjoy by all of us.

After tea children are getting tired but want to make sure they have opened all their presents. After the last of the presents are opened children will start to go to bed exhausted and happy.

Christmas day tends to be a restful day, we do not over indulge but enjoy our food, and drink and each other’s company. What is more the whole of the holidays tend to be restful. We have food already cooked for several days. The hard work is all over by bedtime on Christmas Eve and no one goes back to work until into the New Year. Now what can my husband do during his holiday?
