Advantages: A time to spend with loved ones

Disadvantages: Stessful

I realise that there are about 50 million ops on this topic but I thought I'd chip in with my wants anyway. I have been asked what I want for Christmas and couldn't think of anything. Since I cashed my student loan, I have bought quite a lot of things. And that's all they are, things, consumer objects. My room may look a bit nicer with posters and plants and a nice bedding set but it's not going to change my life, is it? I think that's why people who are rich are often unhappy. I could win the lottery tonight but I really don't think it would change my life all that much. I would still be struggling to do all the work for my degree, and 100 miles away from my boyfriend. As usual, I am deviating off the point so I will get back to my Christmas wish list.

** I would like a story book Christmas **

You know the kind of thing. Happy family, open fire, real tree, beautifully wrapped presents, carol singing. It must happen for some people. So often now Christmas is a time of being lonely and stressing about where you will go and who you will see when. Families are spread out over the country and even over the world and your loyalties are divided as to who you go to for Christmas day. For millions of people whose parents are divorced they have to make this decision every year. My parents aren't divorced but they don't get on and every Christmas there is this fake, forced atmosphere that is so uncomfortable and I hate it. This Christmas I have been invited to my boyfriend's family for Christmas dinner which is nice but I can't help feeling as though it's intruding on someone elses family.

I think Christmas is best for children (up till about 12/13) and couples, especially the first Christmas where you have a child together. That mush be something really special and bring the magic back into Christmas.

I remember when I was little and Christmas really felt special, it was exciting, but nowadays w
hen the shops put up theie decorations up in October and start playing "Last Christmas", it feels as though all the magic has been squeezed out in favour of buying kids the best toy and spending lots of money and getting into debt.

I sound like a right misery. I'm not saying I don't like Christmas. My boyfriend proposed to me last Christmas day, in the evening, which was very special, so how could anything beat that?

If anyone asks me what I want (although now I am no longer considered a child by my family the presents wane down a bit to smellies and money instead of surprises), I'm sure I could think of a few things..

*** Book Tokens ***
I always used to hate getting book tokens as a child and inevitably, every year I would get some. I loved reading, but I used the library so I didn't see the point of wasting money on books. Now though, I can appreciate the joy of owning books that I will read over and over again. I love spending time in bookshops, especially Waterstones in Birmingham as it has lovely comfy chairs and a glass lift! If I had some book tokens I would have the perfect excuse to go and wonder around a book shop for hours. The trouble is, I never seem to want to read the books I am supposed to read for my degree! I am sure they choose the dreariest books so we have no enthusiasm for them whatsoever.

*** Holiday to Japan ***
I am fascinated with Japan and I really, really want to go there. Maybe if any kind DooYoo member is reading this and happens to have spare tickets they could email me ;-) From the worlds' latest technology to beautiful miniature gardens and yummy sushi and of course Hello Kitty!, Japanese culture is so different to our own that I would love to experience it.

*** A Jet-Ski ***
After trying jet-skiing on my birthday (a surprise from my lovely boyfriend) I would love to own a jet ski. Living in Cardiff, I could pop over to Devon or Cornwall in less
than an hour! It gave me such a buzz whizzing around on the water and is great exercise too! My body ached for 2 days after I went!

*** A BMW moped ***
I don't know if you have seen one of these, but they are motorbike/moped crossbreeds with a roof and a stereo! They look so funky and if I had one I could zip around town looking cool and keep dry. It would be a great alternative to cycling everywhere and having a choice of nearly getting myself killed by motorists when I go on the road or getting tutted at by pedestrians if I go on the pavement. You can't win!

*** A Camcorder ***
So I can make my own little films and stuff. I don't want to be the next Spielberg or anything, I would just love the opportunity to film every day life and make people look at it in a new way. It's all this uni work I'm doing on postmodernity, it's making me think too much!

*** Hair extensions ***
I have been growing my hair since I was 17 but it is so slow. I would rather have my own hair that extensions but if I had the money I would still get them done. I always had short hair before now and I long to have long hair right down my back. I was a tom boy when I was little, maybe I am rediscovering my feminine side? Who knows?

I know this is supposed to be a top 10 list and I'm sorry I haven't conformed to that title (I'm halfway there, but if I got 6 book tokens then that would be 10 presents, so it's not really cheating!), and that I do tend to go off on tangents instead of sticking to the subject on hand. Congratulations if you've got this far!

Have a nice Christmas! Make sure you wear the paper hat you get out of your cracker all through dinner and right through the evening. My Dad is the only person who does that in my family and it makes me sad that no-one else can let go and look a bit silly just for a laugh.
