My daughter is not really 'a child' any more at the age of 17, and this gift is for the older child of, say, 13 and upwards, and especially girls. Last year, my elder daughter asked my younger daughter what she would like for Christmas. Alex said that she would really love a mobile phone. This she very kindly received from Kelly and has used it constantly since, a lot of the time for text messages to people, but when she goes out and takes her phone with her, I know that she can contact me whenever, wherever. No queuing up for a payphone that may turn out to be faulty. I know that should I wish to contact her for whatever reason, that I can. (Presuming she has it switched on of course!) The mobile phone is no longer just for 'yuppies' trying to look cool, but an essential piece of equipment for the modern day. When Alex went to the cinema a couple of weeks ago, she phoned on her mobile to say that she and her friend were going to Burger King afterwards and gave me a time when she would be home. This is so much more of a relief than worrying because the film must have finished at such and such a time.... Since my daughter received her phone as a present, they have gone way down in price. My daughter has the one where you buy a voucher whenever necessary and just top-up. No line rental, no connection charge, just buy the phone and buy the vouchers. There are lots more mobile phone companies following suit and lots more choice with the 'Just Talk' deal. All young - and older - teenagers should really be equipped with a mobile phone I think, as long as they are not in use where they could annoy people with their constant ringtones!
