Advantages: Brings the night sky into your room

Last year my 7 year old couldn't really think of anything major that he wanted for Christmas (except for Pokemons, which I really didn't want to go overboard on). We thought long and hard and couldn't come up with much, until I saw an advert in our local paper to have the night sky painted on his bedroom ceiling.

The painter came out a few days before Christmas, and so as not to ruin the surprize, I moved my son in with his sister until Christmas eve. The effect works best with spotlights, so we bought one from Argos and installed it before the painter arrived. She took about three hours to completely cover his ceiling with what looks like millions of stars; including some well known constellations like the bear and Orion, as well as the constellation for his zodiac sign.

The paint used doesn't really show at all in daylight, but when the lights are turned off it really is magical - much better than those glow in the dark stickers that you can buy. The paint is luminous, and glows bright for about ten minutes, and then slowly fades after about an hour or so. It is a lovely way to drift off to sleep and very relaxing.

We moved him back into his room on Christmas Eve, and the look on his face when we switched off the lights was priceless. A year on it still gives him loads of enjoyment, and a lot of street cred when his friends come for sleepovers (very important when you are 7!)
