Advantages: One of the ideals for little girls.
Disadvantages: None.
Every little girl should have a jewellery box. A young lady at the age of sixteen, in possession of a pretty collection of jewellery. What could be nicer? Earrings and charms are normally the cheapest items, because of their diminutive size. Other items available for consideration are necklaces, bracelets, rings, brooches, hair accessories, and lockets. MATERIALS You could opt for 18 karat gold or silver. Alternatively, you could select a theme. You could go for a whimsical line, like fairies, or an astral one, which would incorporate the sun, stars and objects like moonstones. Or it could simply be an eclectic mixture. COST Of course, there are several limiting factors, one of which is cost. But it needn’t necessarily be so. I began my goddaughter’s collection with her christening. The idea was that by adding 2-3 items a year, she would have a decent sized selection by the ages of 16 and 18. Birthdays and Christmas during the early years are ideal. This is the age when they love the wrapping paper and their mothers do most of the appreciation involved. In the later years, a more contemporary present might be appreciated by the child. In the interests of not breaking the bank, you could present a smaller item of jewellery alongside the latest must-have electronic wonder. Somewhere along the line, maybe at the beginning, a jewellery box might also be appropriate. After all, even heirlooms have to start somewhere.

- 29/11/00 You're right. It never is too late. Now that she is older, she'll be more of the age when it is appropriate to wear the pieces of jewellery you give her. Lucky cousin! |
