This may seem like a strange idea, but it is full of common sense, and some older people will not go out and buy these things for themselves. Let me get to the point.
Chip pans!
Yes they are the number one cause of house fires in the UK, and are smelly sticky, unhealthy things at the best of times. All this on top of being impossible to clean!
My solution is to buy your grandparent an electric “enclosed” fryer with thermostat. Now my grandfather has used the same chip pan for countless decades and is not safe using it now. He is alone in the house and I have nightmares about him having a disaster with the hot fat when I’m not there. He is stubbornly against anyone buying him anything, so I dread to think what his reaction to this gift will be.
For me, I can’t wait until he starts using it, I will just have to be very encouraging.
Ok, so this is not a glamourous or lovey dovey gift, but it is life changing, and potentially life saving.
I have also bought him special oil for it that says you can reuse it more than the regular stuff (again&again). You see, he is keen on saving money, and recycles his oil to within an inch of his life and will not listen to the advice and good intentions of certain members of the family!
Just thought I’d add my view here, and maybe suggest you consider buying your g/parent something similar if you haven’t already thought about it.
