Advantages: beautiful island!!!!!
Disadvantages: midgies11
The Isle of Arran is a fairly small island off the west coast of Scotland. It boasts breathtaking scenery and beautiful walks! WHAT TO DO THERE! The Isle of Arran is a perfect place for both experienced and inexperienced walkers. The beautiful coastline is a perfect start for any walk, with many coastal paths that are easy to follow and have fairly even terrain! However if your feeling a little more adventurous you could always venture into the mountain ranges or climb the highest one there - Goatfell! - you get to the top of that and you feel as if your on top of the world! It is fairly difficult to get lost there because during most of your walks you will be able to see the sea so navigation is fairly easy!!! The Isle of Arran is also a perfect base for nature lovers - because it is not very densely populated, there is a great oppurtunity to see lots of inshore animals. Similarly the fact that it is surrounded by sea enables you to go looking for seals and sea otters etc. While i was there i saw many seals and think i did see a sea otter - but it was quite dark so am not very sure that was what i saw! There are a few shops there - a small factory outlet selling Arran mustards and Jams etc but the island is pretty much uncommercialised! WHERE TO STAY There are two Youth Hostels on the island can't remember exactly where (probably one in Brodick - the main town there!) which provide adequate accomodation for families and groups of people. I advise if you are going in the peak months though that you should book a place before you go because the one i stayed in was quite busy! If you want to rough it, there are quite a few farmers that are willing to lend them their field for a night - make sure you ask permission first though! Also if your walking there are a few wild camping sites that offer great camping sites - although all of these do not offer running water etc but they have many advantages!!! <
br> Also on the island are a few hotels - i didn't actually stay in any of them so i couldn't advise on the state of them. Finally a lot of the people on the island do only use their house as a holiday home and actually live on the mainland so if you can get in touch with someone they may lend you their house for the time that you want to spend there! We went to the Isle of Arran at the beginning of July and so in peak midgie season - at least it felt like that anyway!! - if you do go make sure that you take lots of midgie repellent - you'll probably need it!!! If you haven't booked your holiday yet this summer and are quite keen on walking and the countryside i would advise that the Isle of Arran is the perfect holiday destination! - just get in there quick before all the places get booked!!!
